About Me:
Hi, I'm Lyndsey, I'm a 24 years old and origingally from the UK. I have recently graduated and am doing a postgraduate MA in International Relations and Diplomacy though distance learning, whilst I travel and teach English, with my husband. We currently live in Taiwan and I really like it here.
I've had alopecia areata since I was 15. In that time I've had 4 bouts of alopecia. I first lost my hair at 15 and was bullied pretty badly at school. My hair grew back almost straight away though. Next time I was 18 and at college where people were much more understanding. I had just got my first serious boyfriend too so I was worried about that but I am happy to say that we are still together to this day and my hair has never fazed him, and we have recently got married. This time my hair was gone for 2 years and I started experimenting with changing different wig styles loads and did a magazine article and part of a TV show to raise awareness. Approximately 2 years later my hair fell out again for 8 months and then, about a year later, here I am with bout number 4. My hair tends to fall out on the top or the crown where I can't hide it so I shave off what I have left as I have never lost everything on my head but I have had patches all over my body and don't currently have many eyebrow hairs or eyelashes but my eyebrows are semi-permanently tattooed.
I also have bi-polar which I find has a much more negative impact on my life than alopecia. It has been really hard to control and I've had 9 hospital admissions as well as having to take a 2 year gap from uni. I try not to let any medical condition rule my life however, and am proud of my achievements throughout my life. I am also lucky to have an amazing group of loved ones there for me.
My interests include politics (obviously due to my degree), reading, some gaming (such as pokemon, final fantasy and zelda), animals and languages.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia areata
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

I'm going backwards

Posted on June 16, 2015 at 12:21pm 2 Comments

I feel like I am going backwards right now and I feel like this is a place where I can articulate and discuss these feelings.

Last summer I had got to my peak of acceptance for my alopecia. I was happily alternating between my many wigs, scarfs and going bare headed, which I was particularly enjoying the freedom of with my new found confidence. I had another tattoo on my head (I already had one) and had come to a point of seeing alopecia as a quirky part of my identity.

Then…

Who do I want to be? Feeling conflicted

Posted on September 9, 2014 at 6:00pm 2 Comments

I really don't know how I want to present myself at the moment. This summer I was going to work bare headed and feeling pretty positive about myself, seeing my alopecia as a quirky part of me. But now I am drawn towards my wigs again. I've been looking a lot at the dolly and Japanese Kawaii style today as I love this style and I want to present myself like that. yet at the same time I feel like a fake or that I'm not being true to myself with all that make up and wigs etc. I just feel…

Just wanted to re-introduce myself :)

Hi!

I'm Lyndsey and I'm 23 and from the UK. I'm a university student (about to graduate soon), studying History, Philosophy and Politics and have a place to do an MA in International Relations and Diplomacy next academic year. I'm about to get married to my boyfriend of 6 years and I have alopecia areata. I am just having my fourth bout of it now and shaved my head yesterday.

My alopecia first started at age 15. I found a small bald patch on my head and I lost a lot of hair…

Here we go again

Posted on June 19, 2013 at 2:35pm 2 Comments

I feel really bad that I didn't keep up with stuff after my regrowth. In fairness I have been in and out of hospital for 18 months with bi-polar and that time was awful, strangely I had a full head of hair throughout all that. But about a week after finishing my uni exams for my second year, which had been deferred whilst I had been ill, my hair has started falling out again. It's been happening for about a week but it's pretty fast like usual.

Luckily I'm pretty ok with it. This is the…

Well it was nice while it lasted

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 1:59pm 2 Comments

Well I've had about 4 months of regrowth and had a real funky still going on. I still had one patch on the side of my head but in the place that lots of girls are shaving for fashion at the minute and I have a tattoo on it so it looked like I did it on purpose. But this week I've had 2 stressful uni work deadlines and low and behold two little circular patches have appeared which I can't hide because my hair isn't long enough yet. Besides I have never had a flare up of alopecia that has not led… Continue

Hi Darling, hope you're o.k. You should be very proud of yourself, at your tender age you were my inspiration to leave off the wig after 20+ years!! So a big THANKYOU to a VERY brave young lady who has exactly the right approach to alopecia. Sending love to your family, a great bunch of people who have obviously given you the correct approach to life without hair. X
