It sucks that I have alopecia but God has given this to me for some reason. I'm ready to turn this thing around and use it as a blessing to someone else. Can anyone tell me how I can plug in and help others who are going through this? I would really like to work with kids. I worked as a preschool teacher for years and then decided to get out of childcare because I thought I was done with kids after I had my second one. I then started selling insurance, you know..... trying to create my own path. No matter how many times I try to get away from kids, God just keeps pulling me back. I am now a director of a preschool. Imagine that!!! I'm done with trying to do my own thing and I'm ready to follow His plan for my life. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I live in Southern California, LA County.

Try volunteering in children's hospitals. Chemo is more prevalent than alopecia, but baldness is baldness. Also, attend the alopecia support groups in your area, and see if you can run a child's self-portrait project, empasizing strengths rather than sorrow (Draw what you can do well.). This is for kids who already can draw...maybe age 9?

Hello Michelle- I asked the same questions. I didn't choose alopecia but want to turn it into an opportunity to help somebody else who might need support. I have also been around a lot of kids and it seemed to be a natural direction for outreach. I'm attending Alopeciapalooza (camp for kids and families with alopecia) next weekend to (mostly) listen and learn about how I can be supportive to kids with alopecia. I think connecting to local groups is a good first step... listen...learn... and pray. I'm sure that your next step ("His plan") will be more clear. Check out the Children's Alopecia Project...and any local groups like that in your area. You seem like a very caring person and I'm sure you will be a great support in any way that you get involved. Anyway, I'm with you in believing "God gave me this for a reason".
I'll have to look into the "self-portrait project" that Tallgirl mentioned... that sounds like a great idea.

Hey Michelle. I know I don't know you (and can't believe I'm about to say something this cheesy - I'm stiff upper-lipped British!! HAHAH) but whenever I've seen your picture when you've posted on any discussion boards, I've always thought there was a real warmth and kindness to you - and that's just perfect for working with kids!
Obviously I'm no where near California or even in the country so can't offer any practical suggestions.
But there must be lots of paths you could choose from - even if not directly related to alopecia, but still using your alopecia to channel strength and inspiration, such as mentoring, counselling, youth work, etc. Good luck, I hope you find your path really soon.

Thanks AJ, that means a lot to me. Still searching and waiting to hear from the Lord.
