As the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (2002) points out, the term "alopecia," which derives from the Greek word αλωπεκία (alōpekia), simply means hair loss (baldness). This reference source also rightly notes:

"Hair loss occurs for a great many reasons--from pulling it out to having it killed off by cancer chemotherapy. Some causes are considered natural, while others signal serious health problems. Some conditions are confined to the scalp. Others reflect disease throughout the body."

If we bear in mind this generic, less specific use of the term "alopecia," then it clearly makes sense to say that hair dye can cause alopecia (hair loss). See, for example, the following discussion:

@Amy Rose: I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.  Yes, the hair doesn't cause AA but will trigger for some like me.  It's the same as some people are more proned to getting cancer then others.  I obviously have AA but only been triggered by external factors.  I never succumb to taking cotizone shots like the dermatologists suggested.  It would have been disasterous.  The side effects would have caused my bald spots permanent baldness.  The stupid doctors don't know squat! They are only book smart and most are obsessed with making money so they would never bad mouth big pharma companies even if deep down they knew certain medications can have a deadly side effects such as cancer. Hair dye business is multi-billion dollar industry so NO one will step up and admit that it will trigger hair loss.  Just like there's been numerous evidence that deordorant and Anti-perspirant can cause cancer especially breast cancer but no one will step up either because it's also a billion dollar industry.

Hello?! I never said hair dye was the main cause for Alopecia Areata (AA)!!??  I said it's one of the causes! Stress is also one but not the only cause. And some of you said it's immune system attacking our hair follicles.  YES! That's why if there's any thing that which can cause allergic reactions then it can trigger AA! It just so happened to be hair dye for me.  If I'm one to admit it then there are millions out there who are experiencing the same with hair dye and not knowing it because no one is stepping up like I am to say so! There are those who are in this forum that has AA without any thing that's triggering AA and that's unfortunate, I wish I had the answer to those of you who are suffering but I know for me that was the cause.  And I fixed it!  I solved the puzzle for myself, meaning I found the cause and fixed it by NOT using hair dye.  However most of you who are not aware of what's causing your AA is only treating the symptoms like I have in the beginning.  The dermatologists even suggested me to take steroid shots where the bald spots are but I asked if that would stop the it from occurring but all of them couldn't say yes.  Why? Because it was treating the symptoms and NOT the cause.  I even ordered a bottle of some organic stuff that's suppose to make your hair grow back but it didn't work!  This being blind to what was causing my hair loss and kept using the hair dye like a blind fool.  Anyway, I feel for all you people going through hair loss and if I can save one of you from getting your hair back ONLY because hair dye is the cause then all these posts have been worthwhile.  Yes, Lexi, I know you work for a hair salon. Nothing wrong with that.  Just saying.  :)

There are so many 'searching for a cure' for this disease that this site at times is saturated with inaccuracies.  Believe me I wish there was a cure.  No worries Lexi.

Stupid Cupid, 101.  You are such the genius.  Hair dye may have triggered what you deem Alopecia. Many things trigger it.  But doesn't cause it.  Give this stupid topic a rest.  I work in a salon?  Are you joking?  Get over yourself.  Glad your hair loss is better.  If you are allergic to hair dye, that is your issue.  Sorry for your luck.  Can you eat peanuts?  I can, too. Some people cannot.  That is not to say that peanuts cause  Anaphylaxis.  Get over yourself Sherlock.

Hair dye won't ever cause AA, but it could very well be a trigger for some people. There is still no direct knowledge as to why people develop Alopecia, but it is all to do with our Immune System and bodily functions.

I believe mine personally was triggered by a number of things including a bad accident, and my bodys inability to absorb calcium. I suffered a very mild form of Areata for 6 years, only to have it all fall out after I got a contraceptive injection. Then the whole lot fell out straight after. Doctors and Derms will all deny it, but things like this can trigger Alopecia for those that have poor immunity as the body cannot cope.

Since no one has died from using hair dye not much research has been done on hair dye causing AA.  Remember the history in which X-Ray was first invented and the scientist kept getting skin rashes but didn't know why and kept using X-ray on himself and his family then it was too late they all ended with cancer. That's when the FDA stepped in to announce to the world X-ray is dangerous with radiation but hair dye only causes AA to those who susceptible so it' kept underneath the rug.  WAKE UP PEOPLE HAIR DYE WILL CAUSE AA!
