I hate it, I hate it, I hate it

I hate how much it costs to look normal.
I can't go wigless, I have a combo of Trichotillomania and AA, I have HUGE patchy bald spots mostly on the top of my scalp, I'm pale white with black hair, so even when I shave my head completely down to the skin they show up, black patchy spots everywhere, and when I go out in public people look at me like I'm a leper, even go as far as to avoid standing close to me or taking the long way to walk around to avoid me.

Wigs, they are so damn expensive, sure, I can buy a cheapo synthetic wig that will start itching and will look unnatural after a month, even the cheaper human hair wigs wont hold up for more then two month's before they start looking unnatural and kinky.

Even then they still cost upwards of 70+ dollars, and you have to part them very carefully or you risk showing the world your wig cap and making it obvious that its not natural hair.

No I'm talking about the wigs that actually make a difference, make breathing a little easier because you can wear them anywhere, like the full lace wigs, the ones you can pull up and part anywhere and wear just like your normal hair.

and that's the clincher, they cost upwards of 300$ for a basic quality full lace wig.
300+ dollars for something everyone else on this planet can have for free.

SO simple, just a full head of hair.
It makes me want to grit my teeth, kick the dirt and scream to the sky that its not fair.
It's not fair that I can't look normal, and feel comfortable at the same time because of how expensive it is, It's not fair that the people who claim to help will suck you dry of any money you have.

I spent 2200$ on a "Solution" from hairclub, I'm still paying the damn thing off, it was a stupid toupee that they glued to my scalp and told me to come back regularly for reapplications, then after three months the damn thing FELL OFF, they told me it would cost me 90$ an hour to have it put back on, AN HOUR it took two hours for the first application, then they told me I needed to buy a new headpiece, another 2200$, After six short months of having their "permanent solution". Ouch. Needless to say, I didn't get the replacement hairpiece, as I said I'm still paying off the first one.

I'll say it again, it's not fair! It's not fair that we can't have what everyone else in this whole wide world has just by living, it's not fair that we can't go into a salon and have our hair styled for our wedding day's. It's not fair that we have to spend every single penny in our bank account just to have something like that.

How... How can any person AFFORD 300$ at one time ?!

I guess I'm just acting like a spoiled child, but I hate feeling taken advantage of.

You are not acting like a spoiled child :) you just need to vent sometimes! That's why I joined this site partly. So I can vent my feelings to people who actually know what it's like. I've always felt like I could never really admit to even my family about how upsetting it truly is to go through this. I have purchased supposed human hair full lace wigs and you're so spot on! They don't last, at least the ones I've bought. I can't afford to waste money on something that will only last a short time. Not to mention, the ones I had didn't fit my tiny pea head perfect and the tape was always coming off or ripping the hairs through the lace! It's very frustrating. It was nice to wear a pony tail though for a short time lol.

You are not a spoiled child.. We all go through this.. being a girl and having alopecia is tough.. and Wigs are so expensive.. I recently found out that the lady I was buying my wigs from had been charging me more than They cost and my family is just in shock.. I spend roughly 5,300-4,400 on a new wig each year.. It breaks my heart that I cant help my parents pay for them.. Its so frustrating because like you said alopecia is tough enough and we shouldn't have to worry about one more thing.. Especially a thing that's supposed to make us feel better.. But for the record you can really pull off the bald look so well! You are incredibly gorgeous and if it's easier to go wig-less do it! It makes you brave and it is really inspiring!

No spoilt child here it takes a lot of money to "look normal" we are fortunate to be in a position that we can afford good wigs etc. Love hearing a rant it shows your feeling and that your getting them out.

My husband is in the Army, we have two kids and make enough to get by and have a few extra things here and there. if I were to put out 300$ at once I'd be bankrupt *sigh*

Its just a shame because these "programs" to help with the cost of wigs make you jump through a million hoops to even be considered for candidacy, I just wish that they would make quality products at a more affordable price, or at least have some sort of payment program where we wouldn't have to wait six months to possibly save up to have a product :/

You are completely right! People have no idea how expensive disease this is! I hate to write this because I am not positive about this, but, if you have insurance, I have heard that some insurance companies are covering a portion of the cost of wigs if your doctor writes it up as a "prosthetic." I am not sure if that is still the case but it may be worth looking in to...

Buying wigs from China online has saved us heaps, but it is a ridiculous expense in the West when you see how much you can buy hair in Asia and how cheap they make the wigs is China. It is an emotionally damaging disease and people exploit this to make way larger profits on wigs than are acceptable. We were fortunate to be in a financial position to not have any issues with cost but when we were young with kids at school it would have been a different story. Like you we hate it and always will but what I hate more is the scammers who have lotions and potions to cure you and it always costs a fortune, if there was a cure for going bald there would be no bald males, our egos are big enough to spend any amount for cure.

Kayla: perhaps it depends on where you live, but I have found a GREAT local vendor who works like crazy to get me the quality and fit I like and can afford. I have had a "reasonably priced" synthetic wig which I have worn daily for nearly 6 months and it is as nice as the day I bought it. (The price is 110 dollars, which seems expensive until you compare some other places that really do try to rip us off). Since I used to spend about 450 dollars a year on cuts, colors etc,, not to mention hair products, I thought this wig was a pretty fair deal. Look around. You do NOT have to spend thousands on a wig that lasts only 3 months. Plus, when I saved up for wig #2, I got a slightly different style and can alternate them. Both seem to be lasting very well. I will probably never have the guts to go out bald...too old to learn that new trick, but I honestly forget I am wearing a wig. The two I bought were a Raquel Welch and an Eva Gabor. Blessings, Kayla . this is not fun, but I will rock my wigs if I must. Number 3 will be a REALLY different style. Cannot wait to see the reactions of people I know. (Most know I am a baldy and know I am goofy, so I think they will just laugh). Laugh if you can, cry when you must, rage and rant and vent. It's your right. Go girl!!
