I wouldn't ask the genie for my hair back!

I've been struggling with a problem I've had for almost 6 years - severe jaw pain due to an injury to my TMJ in 2005. Every few months it acts up, usually brought on by too much talking. I love to talk, and I teach dance and drumming classes.

I reaggravated the problem at the beginning of February. It feels like someone is constantly sticking an ice pick into my cheekbone/jaw area, and it goes on for months at a time. Even quiet talking is too painful. Multiple doctors and many different treatments haven't helped resolve it.

Why am I telling you this? Lately I've been imagining that a genie in a bottle (or some other such supernatural entity) offered to grant me one wish in regard to my health. I was somewhat surprised to realize that there's NO question in my mind: I WOULDN'T ask to have my hair back permanently. I would ask to have never injured my jaw and to not have this pain and limitation for the rest of my life.

How about you? If a genie granted you one health-related wish, would it be a complete and permanent restoration of your hair, or would it be something else? Asking this question sort of puts the whole "bald" thing in perspective.

Mary

p.s. Those of you who I am fortunate enough to meet at NAAF - be prepared for me to not be able to talk much, and to have to hug VERY carefully. ( ;-)

I'm not a doctor...but your symptoms sound like a condition that my husband suffers from. He has trigeminal neuralgia. It is SEVERE nerve pain in the face. The way you describe your pain and the location of the pain...it's very similar. Meds and even surgery didn't help him. He does get some relief from chiropractic adjustments. I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this pain! I hope that you can get some relief from it soon! Take care!

Michelle, I just looked up TN on Wikipedia, and it doesn't sound like my pain....but I'm going to check on it with my doc.

Thanks for your concern. I'm sorry to hear your husband suffers from this - it sounds terrible.

I'm trying acupuncture right now, together with not talking at all for awhile.

I'd stay bald and be rid of polymyalgia...definately not into pain. Feel for ya Mary. Living with pain wears you down inch by inch and to be free of it would be worth staying bald for :)

If I could have that one Genie in bottle wish... It would be a paid off mortgage. I don't miss fuzzing with my hair. I hope you find permanent pain relief soon.

So sorry to hear about your pain Mary. Like you, I wouldn't wish for my hair back but for my husbands pain to go away. He has arthritis in both shoulder joints, ruptured disks in his back and fibromyalgia. I would rather he had no pain than me getting my hair back. I will send positive thoughts your way.

This is a great question.
I too would not wish for my hair to return, I would ask for my eyebrows & lashes though.
If this is based on 3 wishes, that I would no longer have to live in pain 24/7 365 & not having to take my pain medication daily or have to go in for cbc, sed rate, liver panel every 6 months :) way cool.
Tolerance, much comes from tolerance for example, peace with peace a better world for all.
I know I'm a Polly Anna & thats ok.

Update: I think I've finally found a doctor who can help me with this jaw pain. At my first appointment last week, he took x-rays which show that the disc in my TMJ is slipped out of position, causing muscle spasms and imbalance. The treatment is a long process, but I already feel better thanks to some muscle relaxant pills.
