I stopped wearing my wigs this past summer because they were too hot and uncomfortable. It was a major step for me and have continued to be conflicted about it. The ER where I work is always cold and I expect it to be even colder this winter. I was talking to some of my co-workers about starting to wear a wig again because my head is always cold. Everyone chimed in that I shouldn't do it. They all said I looked way better with my head bald. I was really surprised by their reactions.

The funny thing is I worried for a long time about going without my wig. I was afraid of what people would think. Now I find that all my concerns were for nothing. Even my patients compliment me on my look. It has also given me the opportunity to educate people about alopecia because most people ask me if I'm being treated for cancer.

So for all of my alopecia "sisters and brothers"...if you are considering going natural, don't be afraid! People are more accepting than you may think.

Karen, I must say that I have had the same positive experience as you. Most of my friends and family prefer me without my hair. I think people get use to the "you" that is most comfortable in the world and when you are comfortable that is when they feel most comfortable with you. My sense is that they sense that comfort and feel it too. In addition, I think most people wish they could just be themselves and when they see someone else doing it in an area of their lives they celebrate it and don't want you to hide. They potentially feel that perhaps they are more "acceptable" with their "imperfections" too.

I just shaved my head last week and bought a wig. I would much rather go bald but it is cold and I haven't gotten the nerve up to go out in public or go to work with no wig. I'm working towards it though, I happen to like the way I look bald! Thanks for the comments Karen and Cheryl it may have given me that push of confidence to go natural!

I too get compliments Karen and some say they don't even notice anymore. I think confidence really helps and people just except it. Right from the start I've never worn a wig and that's thanks to the support I rec'd from the wonderful people on this site.

You are looking great without wigs so I don't think you need to be concerned about it.Dr.Batras
