I just happened upon this great
blog post and article from "Creative Loafing" magazine about the lead MC from Atmosphere, a contemporary hip hop group, who talked about how alopecia affected his artistic career. I didn't find anything about it when I searched Alopecia World, so I figured I'd share it in my debut AW blog post :)
Here's his take, which I think is very poignant and hits on a key goal/issue for most of us who are members of this site:
“In ’05, I developed alopecia and started losing my hair. I had to come to grips with the fact that I can’t base my art and my career around my appearance,” says Sean Daley, aka MC Slug. “I mean that metaphorically as well. I cannot base it on an image. I have to figure out a way to ensure they stop staring at the image, and start paying attention to the words and the beats.”
For anyone who likes hip hop and has
listened to his work, you may agree that he succeeds in creating great music regardless of the image. (I didn't even know what MC Slug looked like before this morning, although I've been listening to them for over a year).
And it was great for me to see this reference to my condition on an edgy music blog (in a sense that doesn't just refer to that band called Alopecia, that is).
As for what rhymes with alopecia, the blogger suggests "Indonesia" and "Hallween, ya" ... ha ha.
I might add, "Nice to meet ya" ?
Peace,
Audrey
