New to AA - Do You Hate Showering Now?

OK, this is probably my first attempt at humor (good or bad) since I've come to find out about my AA (more info in my profile).

Showering used to be a fun activity for me. Not the same kind of fun like dinner out with my wife, a round of golf, or anything like that. But at minimum, it was enjoyable...refreshing. Either first thing in the morning to wake my happy arse up and get ready for the day, or sometime during the evening after a long, stressful day.

Now???? Man oh man...I HATE going to take a shower. No worries, I still do since I refuse to compound issues with body odor and hygeine issues :-) That said, I sure do hate showering now. The sheer angst of shampooing, then looking down to see a sight similar to what Normandy must have looked like on D-Day. Then, the worse of it...after you've rinsed off, forgotten about the handful of lifeless hair in your palms..........you get ready to towel off.

I don't know about you all, but prior to toweling off, I purposely look at my white towel and inspect it for pre-existing hair-corpses in it. Once I'm satisfied that there are none or that I've taken a good mental account, I then proceed to dry my hair. There were days where I would see 5-6 hairs there...whew!!! BUT, there are days where it's just plain depressing.

I try to shrug it off and convince myself that it's got to get worse before it gets better (sound familiar to anyone?). However, if I'm honest with myself, each shower is almost a swift kick to the twig and berries.

Oh well, I'm certain life goes on. Hope things get better for me, and for all of us deserving folks in this forum.

Take care,

John

My anxiety always flaired up at shower time - it was absolutely the worst. Especially when I would see a big cluster of hair in the drain and knowing it represented a new or expanding spot. For a while when I would blow dry my hair it seemed like a fountain of hair coming off my head and the floor seemed like it was covered in hair. We used to vaccum the bathroom rug almost daily. Anyway - I'm hoping the day will come soon for you when showers are once again just nice and refreshing!

I feel the same way...in fact, the other day, I was combing my wet hair out after a shower...and my daughter walked in just as I had smoothed out a fistful of hairs in my hand that I had just run through my hair. I don't think she had ever seen me do that before. She went, "aaahhhh!" and ran away. *sigh*

Every morning I have to just swallow my disappointment about all the hairs that fall out. There are still plenty left on my head at the moment, but it's apparent how thin the overall look of my hair is becoming. And it looks frizzy, too, since so many hairs are short. It's pretty difficult to smooth those down. I feel your pain.

I don't have any new patches at the moment....but every day, lots of lost hairs....

Well, glad to see that I'm not the only one who dreads what used to be a great start/pause in the day. When I first joined AW a few days ago, I would read about the support, advice, care, etc. that I would get from this site. I'm happy to say it's been true. You have all been great. The best part is that it's coming from people who can genuinely relate. All the best to everyone!

Ditto - Shaving my head took care of the problem completely!

I experienced the similar situation for a couple of months when my hair start falling out, no more problem after I shaved everything off and of course I enjoy shower ever since, cool water on your scalp, especially the nice shower head which has the massaging mode, on your scalp/head...so nice and refreshing...

Of course I dont really remember what is like to shampoo the hair anymore now or what it feels like...but it doesnt really matter now..

bye bye

Oh, so true!!! Showering is no longer one of my favorite parts of the day and even worse is having to comb through my wet hair after I wash it. I had read somewhere that the average person loses 100 hairs a day, so in the beginning I was counting each of the hairs that came out of my head after I washed it to see if it exceeded the "average". Is that obsessive or what! :) My husband finally went out and purchased a brown trash can to replace the white one we had in the bathroom because it would stress me out so much to see my dark hair piling up in the bottom of the trash can during the week. I'm much better now, but still find myself constantly tugging at the healthy areas of my hair to see if there is any unusual shedding starting up. I am so, so much better than I was about things months ago, but I still have those moments when I have to quell my sudden panic.

I agree, my hair started falling off in clumps and I was shedding all over the place. The more I looked down on the floor our family was stepping on hair every where. Watching my hair falling off and just laying on the floor only reminded me, "You will be bald ASAP". I finally had it, I was fed up with feeling bad and fed up with my family being subjected to the hair everywhere in the house. One day I just decided randomly to shave it off, not only do I feel more liberated but I look better too (all evened out). Life is a lot better dealing with Alopecia now that I don't have reminders all over the house screaming my name. Now I feel more in control :)
