Hello, my name is Trisha im 21 and have recentely been diagnosed with AA. This is the most current picture. I first noticed a spot a in april that was a quater of this size. Its been very difficult for me considering i do not have health insurance AND my hair was my favorite physical feature about myself. Any words of wisdom would be great, advice, stories. Also, my biggest question is......Will i lose all my hair? does AA always spread? how long would it usually take for all to fall out...? Thanks

I have had aa for the past 14 years and have been recieving injections every 6 weeks for the past 8 years. I have not lost all my hair and still have a nice amout. Though each individual has a different situation so I dont know what your case will be.
We are here for you.

Mine was AA grades 5 to 12 and into two years of college. Then, it grew back for 15 years. After trying birth control pills for only a few weeks, it started falling out again in my 30s. I stopped the pills, but the hair loss continued to AU, then AT. I just wears wigs in public, bald at home. You will survive this, and if you imagine your worst-case-scenario and come up with a way to cope emotionally (and with choices of head gear already planned and budgeted), then any challenge can be met.

I have AGA, not AA, but I just wanted to say welcome. I was diagnosed when I was in high school. I wanted to say that you are definitely not alone. You can get through this, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope you find what works for you, and we are here for you when you need it.

Hi Trisha,
Alopecia is very unpredictable,so no one can tell you what will happen other to say we are here for you no matter what the future holds. I can only tell you my experience but yours and everyone else's on this site will be different. I started noticing hair loss about 15 years ago. I had a patch the size of a dime then a quarter then it grew to the size of my whole hand. Same area as you, behind my left ear and above. With steroid injections it grew back. For years it would come and go never as big as the size of my palm. Sometimes it grew back on its own, other times I tried injections or topical steroids. Last year it started again and I was not concerned.... Well this time was different . Who knows why but I ended up loosing triple what I ever had in the past. I tried steroids again but then realized why I had such difficulties in the past with hormones....it was the steroid injections messing around with them ( for me ). So I decided to stop injections plus they were not stopping the hair loss anyway. For the first time I was faced with watering a wig. I want you to know that tears were shed but in the end I know it is going to be okay. I'm okay and I am still me. Some days are hard but for the most part it just becomes a new "normal". Almost everyone I know knows about my alopecia and wig wearing so it is no big secret. That's just how I chose to deal with it. Hugs to you. Seek the help of a dermatologist if you can. And don't worry about what might happen because it might not :-) for me I would have wasted 15 years of worry....

I found this article on injectable-corticosteroids used for problems with joints. I thought you may find it of interest. I think it is the same general treatment for AA.
