I have AU and the last time I was at the Derm he asked to look at my nails and they were fine at the time. I asked what he was looking for and he said pitting of the nails. So I was painting my nails yesterday and found that I have started to see some of the pitting. Has anyone had this happen to them and how bad can I expect this to get?

Hi Jeannie.  My nails became very pitted, brittle and started to tear.  The really bad ones started to, um, crumble at the tips.  Not very nice to look at and they always seemed to catch on something.  My Derm prescribed Clobetasol cream, which I put on my finger nails nightly.  It's a nuisance.  I read on a discussion somewhere on this site, about somebody who said it was related to low Biotine levels.  So I started taking a supplement about two weeks ago, and I think it is working.  They seem to be stronger and are slowly healing.  Don't be like me and wait until they get really bad.  Get it taken care of soon.

My son has alopecia. He had Alopecia Universalis, losing all hair including eye lashes and eyebrows though he has regrown eye lashes and eye brows. His nails are pitted and have been for about 2 years now. They don't look weird or anything. People don't even notice even when I point them out. So i guess for some people it doesn't get very bad at all.

My nails are pitted and ridged.  I find that it goes in cycles, they'll improve for awhile and then they'll hardly grow.  My dermatologist told me to take 1000mcg of Biotin daily which I have for the last two years.

I used to regularly get manicures, so when my dermatologists looked at my nails, they never saw any pitted spots.  I go through phases of eczema on my fingers, so I stopped getting manicures for a while now, and it's only now I see the pitted spots because they aren't being buffed away.  Right now it's only my right middle finger.  It just looks like I hit it with a hammer and it's dented in.
