So I've recently started taking Prednisolone tablets again (the last time I took it was back in mid 2014) and was just wondering if anyone knew the time it took to take effect. The last time my AA was much worse (barely had any eyebrows and had quite a few noticeable patches) and by the end of the treatment I had full regrowth.
This time around, my AA is in a much better place (but still not the greatest) and I'm starting to get worried as I'm two weeks into the treatment and only just starting to notice regrowth. The reason for my concern is due to the fact that every two weeks the dosage goes down by half a tablet (two tablets for two weeks, 1 and 1/2 for another two weeks, etc.) and I don't know how effective it'll be in the coming weeks.
If someone could give me any info at all it would be much appreciated as I can't remember exactly how things went down the last time that I took Prednisolone.
Hi Jack. I have Lichen Planopilaris (scarring alopecia) and was given a 6 week course of Prednisolone to reduce levels of inflammation on my scalp. The treatment was very effective in reducing pain and soreness but had no impact on hair loss. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Hi Cissie and Jack,
no, steroids are no woder! But they can be pretty dangerous. Steroides solve nothing, merely press down your own immune system. The temporary regrowth is caused by the effect that your immunity cannot make your hair fall our for a while. Yws, for a while. And steroides are harmful, make you unprotected, harm your bones, etc. I personally am against prednilosone and other steroides, I have been struggling for 37 years now but everythong seems to be useless, now I have pathes of hair, hot bold patches. The proportion is quite the opposite. That's it. I am quite healthy, do sports, can run for 1 hour without stop which is pretty good for my age (54 this month) have tried a lot but in vane. Sometimes I have eyebrows, sometimes not. Relaxation and psychological trainings can make a lot. Try it. I had good success, but now I am tired, I should do it again. My eyebrow began to growback as I began to run regularly 3 times aweek.
All the best, by. Sue
Steroids are dangerous. I have tried them to regrow hair. I was successful I had a full head of hair. I also had the "moon" face that comes along with high steroid use and was developing an ulcer. I stopped the steroids and all of my hair promptly fell out. But the damage done to my stomach has been permanent. My advice would be to avoid using them.
I have heard all the warnings about steroids, but I spoke to my brother-in-law who is a doctor & he told me the limited amount of time - 6 weeks - for the prednisone treatment would not cause me any harm. I've done the prednisone treatment a total of 3 times. I did it in conjunction with Anthralin - an annoying treatment where you leave the ointment on your scalp increasing the treatment from a few minutes a day to 20 minutes a day. I also used Rogaine twice a day. In addition my dermatologist gave me cortisone shots in my scalp every few weeks. I was very successful in having regrowth twice. The third time I delayed the prednisone treatment for months for personal reasons. The last time I had no success. I have now accepted the fact that I'm a bald woman. It's quite freeing once you get over the change. My family & friends have accepted me for who I am. I do wear temporary tatoo eyebrows. I wish you the best of luck. Don't give up while you are having success & don't let the non-doctors out there scare you.
I'm taking Medrol, it's also corticosteriod, for more than a year now and I have almost full head of hair. A year ago I had no hair and half eyebrows. I Know there are risks involved but nothing else workd for me.
A very small study using statins has had some success with AU. The statins, in combination, work to reduce inflammation and are thought to have many fewer side effects than other forms of anti -inflammatory medications such as steroids.
