I was diagnosed about six weeks ago with Alopecia Areata. This disease is very new to me. I tried the steroid solution and it just irritated my skin. Yesterday (4/23) was my first time getting the steroid shots. I was given 7. So how many of you have tried the steroid shots? If these shots do not work I am considering getting a biopsy done just to see what is going on and making sure there are not any other auto immune disease effecting my system. Also what has everyone been trying for their hair? For shampoo I am trying non scented baby shampoo and coconut with vitamin E conditioner. Have any of you ever noticed that a certain medication has made it worse? And for the ladies, has birth control made it worse for you? I am at a point where I would like to keep the hair I have because i still have quite a bit on my head left. So if you have any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them!!

I was diagnosed last year with AA. I tried the steroid lotions, creams, etc.. The only thing those did, was irritate my head. Be sure to visit your dermatologist. I recieved the steroid injections where they stick a needle into the outer layer of the scalp & those worked very well for me. The thought of having a needle put into your scalp isnt very nice, but its worth a try. I hope it works for ya! It has been exactly a year since i was diagnosed & all my hair has grown back. GOOD LUCK GIRL!! :)♥

Hi Erika,

I developed AA almost 3 yrs ago, well, May makes 3 years. I went to a dr. in a city close to to my hometown whom did a biopsy, pull test etc etc and gave injections and after causing atrophy on the fatty layer of my head, eventually gave up on me and referred me to B.U. Medical/Boston. I have been seeing Dr. Goldberg for about a year and a half and she said she will NEVER not see me, NEVER not give me the injections, which WORK wonders...and I am happy to report, I am in remission....no new spots since October of 2012. OH and Dr. Goldberg actually undid the damage my local dermatologist did. Do not settle if you are not satisfied with the first, second or third Dr's treatment etc....this disease is not curable but it is beatable! Good luck and hugs :)
