i'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. i had a very bad experience w a dermatologist and it just made the situation worse (adding more stress to an already stressful situation).

i had a biopsy once and the pathology report suggested trichtotillomania but that was clearly not what was happening (the dermatologist agreed that the path report was wrong) so sometimes they just misdiagnose because the conditions can present in similar ways.

hang in there!

i wasn't knocking dermatologists as i happen to have a very good one now whom i really like. but i have heard from more than one dermatologists ( who are also friends) that in general, many prefer to avoid hair loss patients, simply because it is as frustrating for them (in terms of limited treatment options and the field's understanding of the disorder) as it is for us.

Oh my gosh... doctors can be so non-understanding sometimes. I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I have had a lot of those same experiences myself. I have Fibromyalgia, which no blood test or scan can prove positive, so it is very hard to get a doctor of any kind to believe that I really am in pain. Because of their lack of knowing exactly whats wrong, sometimes they just make an "educated" guess. But, you would think that a dermatologist, who is supposed to specialize in skin disorders, would be educated enough to know the difference between Alopecia and Trichotillomania. If she was so educated she might be able to tell the difference by looking at the skin. Keep your head up. Maybe you should ask your mom if you should get a second opinion. Sometimes it takes seeing many doctors before you find the right one. Everything will work itself out in the end though hunny.

Hi Nikki, what Kristen said is absolutely right! It may take seeing many doctors to find the right one. A big part of success in treatment is in your comfort level and confidence in your doctor. Have your mom help you research to find a new doctor, and I am confident you will find a better one.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. I think you should see a different dermatologist in a different office.
