So about 3 weeks ago I received my new Freedom wig. I was really scared at first because I didn't want to get my hopes up about it. I didn't want to get it, put it on, and hate it! I didn't want to find out that after all the time, effort and money that went into getting it, it wasn't for me.

Well my fears were quickly put aside...I LOVE IT!! It is so comfortable and realistic. I have found that it makes me more satisfied with me. What I mean is that having been bald for as long as I have there were times when I would look in the mirror and despise the person I saw staring back at me. My new look makes me feel like ME again! The person I feel like inside. When I take it off I don't mind what I see because I know that I have a choice.

Is it hard to style only because it's not your own hair? Do you shower in yours?

Ok, that's why i am getting the "gripper" it's human hair but not custom so that way i have another to wear whenever my vacuum needs repair. You can look at the grippers at Follea website, that's the company who makes them. My gripper will run me about $2,000 for 6". I am getting thru the gal that will be styling and cutting my vacuum when i get it. She said that her clients that wear the vacuum and grippers say they will never go back to a synthetic wig. Doesn't surprise me!
It will be nice to be able to run my fingers thru my hair (vacuum) and not have my wig move on me.

NAAF's Ascot Fund used to have money available for hairpiece purchase assistance; I'm not sure how the fund is currently doing but it's worth an inquiry. The name of Freedom Wigs is remarkably appropriate as the hair stays in place without getting itchy, no worry of shifting or needing to scratch:). The new vacuum wigs breathe; the earlier ones were horribly hot, literally sealing up your head and filling with perspiration...ugh! (My husband would watch me trying to cool down in the ice arena, wondering how anyone could possibly be hot with wind and hair blowing across their face; it was the ultimate warming cap.) BTW, the short blond one in this photo is 11 years old! ((Hugs)) Susan

thanks Susan- and your hair looks awesome. so that's a Freedom wig? wow, 11 years old! You must have more than one! Tell me more about the wig when you have time and how long you have had alopecia areata or universalis. I checked Ascot Fund and they will only give you $500 towards a wig under $1500 and you have to meet their criteria according to what you make a year.

Hi Leslie - As to the wigs, I have several that are regular worn but only 2 vacuums, one bought about a year ago that needs to be cut again. The universalis wasn't until my late 40s, although there were hair problems in the teens. Did I understand correctly that the Ascot Fund is only available on hair pieces that "cost $1500 or less"? That would eliminate some of the real hair pieces that aren't even a vacuum style...sigh.

Did you have a hard time adjusting the your Freedom wig? I ordered a Gripper wig today by Follea from the stylist that will be styling my Freedom wig. I can't wait. These human hair wigs make me nervous though, especially the custom made from Freedom. So many things to pick out and wanting it to look like you again. I just don't see how that's possible but i have heard nothing but positive on both vacuum and the gripper wigs.
Yes, It's my understanding that they only cover up to $500. It's too bad, but i imagine there are alot of people that can't afford a synthetic barely. It makes me sad and i feel fortunate i can get a vacuum. It's put a pinch on our finances but my husband is so supportive we are making it happen. I think it's the only way for me to finally stop thinking about my hair loss 24/7.

Hi Leslie - Are the Follea wigs quite a bit less expensive? Also, what is the cap lining comprised of and how is it secured to the head?

They are less than Freedom vacuum wigs. Because they are not custom made you can get one quicker and they are very nice. The stylist I go to said her clients that have the grippers LOVE them. I did find out yeterday that you cannot get the 6" hair anymore from Follea. I don't want to try to explain the cap linings but if you go to their website it would be more helpful than me. they have a "sport" gripper and also a "cool" gripper and I believe these were Peggy Knights designs.
