It has been awhile since I have visited, I don't know why I stay away, I love, love reading everyone's blogs. I am brought to tears, and inspired every single time:)

I have a question to pose to my fellow alopecian's...When interviewing for a job when do you bring up the subject of alopecia? I wear scarves and hats and know that many people take one look at me and assume cancer. So what about for a job interview? I look forward to hearing what you all think:)

I got my job without anything on my head. The HR-person asked me about my hair very friendly, and I was glad to be asked rather than to let it without explanation. My boss never seemed to notice my bald head. He never made any comment and I never commented his haircut. It's just out of professional purpose...(I do not have direct customer contact)...

I would wear my scarf proudly and ease the Alopecia into the conversation. I would use it to show my strength, and determination. Make it work for you girl.

I agree, I would bring it in as a volunteer/Philanthropist activity. Something along the lines that you are an advocate/activist for alopecia in your own personal way, and go on to explain what alopecia is and why you chose to not hide it.

Thx everyone for your input:) I am just going to play it by ear. I am not usually so concerned what other think of me, but I have been out of the working world for awhile (stay-at-home-mommy:), and I am a little nervous about getting back out there. I will keep you posted on the out come:)

Agreed. I stay away for long stretches of time I guess to try and pretend this isn't happening to me, but it is, and when I come back and read I feel less alone and a little better.

As someone who interviews people for a living (I'm a recruiter), it would be illegal of a potential employer to ask you about your hair loss and you have no obligation to explain it.

That being said...

From the standpoint of one who has this condition...bringing it up during an interview is probably a good idea. I would want the person interviewing me to know that I'm not sick with cancer and that my condition doesn't limit my ability to do the job. Discussing it also would allow me to display some of my positive qualities like courage, strength, adaptability, etc. I would keep it brief, though, because you don't want to take the focus off of your skills and background - that's really what's going to get you the job.

Good luck out there and message me directly if you need anything! :)
