This is the most blogging I have done since joining Alopecia World. I am getting very, very tired of carefully styling my hair to hide my "spots". I am a very active person. I run, bike, and I swim almost daily. That means that I have to "do" my hair every day. I am sick of it. I am thinking of getting a wig. Any words of wisdom?

well, I used to be extremely active, like you. I have actually stopped working out, because of my 'ten strands' *rollseyes*. It sounds pathetic, but getting it sweaty, having to wash again etc , worrying what it is doing WHILE I am exercising, ugh, etc,
yes, I know where you are at. It really is exhausting. It's not vanity, I just find it too stressful.
keep enjoying your activities :) Sounds like you are really fit!
Only 'you' will know the right time for a wig. It is such a mental battle.
* stay strong *

Wig hair stays perfect and holds shape on the stand while you sleep. Go for it!

Words of Wisdom? Yeah.... just do what makes you happy (unless it's murder, in which case, don't).
If you want a wig, go get one - if you don't like it, it's just a few dollars, but if you do, it's priceless. Do you really want to be saying, in times to come, "Oh, I wish I'd..." or "if only..."?? Naah, didn't think so :)

Oh, and those aren't really Words of Wisdom - they're just common sense. JFDI, as they say in I.T. (you can probably guess what that stands for...)

When I had hair I wore a lot of head bands. It helped to hide the fact that I had no hair on the sides or back of my head. I too struggled with going to the gym, people still noticed the hair loss but all were supportive.

My daughter wore scarves and headbands like those above but had to wash her thin hair everyday. She wears all lace wigs now. She tapes them on and wears them for 4 days before doing anything to them but brushing her hair. We went on a rollercoaster in vegas the 3rd night she was wearing it and I said do you want to put a headband on before doing this. She said I assure you this wig is going no where. She was right. She does anything she wants in them. We pay in the $400 range for European Human Hair. Message me if you want the sites.

I sympathize with how you feel. I just joined Alopecia World yesterday and blogged about this "transition". For me, I have to take the step, hiding the spots is no longer working. Adding insult to injury, I have no income, having lost my job almost 3 years ago. I would love to buy a couple of wigs, to see if I even like wearing wigs and will settle for some caps, hats, bandanas should I choose to. This is a non-option for me right now without income. Do the things you enjoy, swim, work out, live your life. You may come to find you'll be liberated and wonderful things will come. Remain in light, remain hopeful and positive.

It is a big step but has its pluses. I go to lots of fitness classes in my wigs and don't need to worry about patches being exposed. I wear tape with my synethic wigs and have no problem when hanging my head upside down in yoga say. Only down side is it feels like wearing a wooly hat when exercising. Maybe that burns of more calories as extra sweating. Do what you will feel happiest with. I remember when I first made the choice at 14 thinking people won't see my patches anymore great no one will laugh at me. Then I got a wig and then people noticed that instead. Both have ups and downs. But there's so many supportive people to talk to who understand and that really helps. Good luck with making a decision!

When my bald spots got too big to hide, I shaved my head, and felt much better immediately. I had CONTROL back! I felt much more self-conscious with bald spots showing than I do as a proudly bald woman. I can't stand wigs, so this is who I am now. Life goes on. Good luck.

I LOVE the buff you can get it on sahalie.com. They have loads of patterns. I wore them when I had hair with my pony tail coming out and now I wear them with no hair. I love to sleep in them too. They stay put and they now have a half buff (not good for us baldies but good for you at this point. My friends love all the patterns and now surprise me sometimes with new ones. abonitascarf.com is awesome too as well as 4women.com. Great women that own those companies so its nice to know what you are supporting as well as you wear them. It's all about the options and having fun with it. Good luck!

I wear scarves while working out. There is no way that I would be able to work out with a wig on, although a lot of people do it is just not something that would work for me. As long as you are comfortable .......just don't stop working out or doing the things that you enjoy in life. Life is to short. Good luck.
