Hi all!!
So if any of you have seen I posted almost 2 years ago that a script I wrote about a girl with Alopecia helped me get picked to move in the competitive screenwriting program at the University of Michigan. Well the next semester Winter '10 I re-wrote what was at the time called Miss Michigan 1989. Through the semester I ended up changing the title of the script to Beauty Queen and with in my 2nd draft creating a new emotional relationship that pushed me to my emotional limits as a writer. My hard work from this paid off as it got me into the next level of screenwriting and the highest screenwriting class at the University called SAC 427, which I took this past fall 2010. Only 6 students get into this class and once you make it into this class you can become a screenwriting major. In 427 we were able to write a brand new script. Because Beauty Queen was such an emotional story for me to write I decided to have fun with my script and I wrote a Judd Apatow style film called Shark Tank. I found success with Shark Tank as it was picked to made into a short film in the highest production class at the University (SAC 423). Shark Tank will go on to be shown at the Traverse City Film Festival in July.
In January of 2011 I was able to apply for a screenwriting contest that would put one of my scripts into production for the Michigan Creative Film Alliance which is a collaboration between three universities' film schools (University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University). I entered Beauty Queen on whim...well on March 30th it was announced that Beauty Queen would be made for the Michigan Creative Film Alliance in summer 2011! So this summer we will be shooting Beauty Queen. The story of a pageant queen who is diagnosed with Alopecia just before her first semester of college. An unlikely friendship teaches her true beauty comes in all forms. So again thank you to everyone with Alopecia that has been in inspiration to me! And thank you most of all to NAAF for being the best support system ever over the past 15 years! Beauty Queen will premiere next spring March 2012 at the Detroit Institute for the Arts. Thank you again for being amazing! All my bald lovin' -
