Very new to this Alopecia...stuff.
December 13,2009 combing my hair to head to church I observe a missing clump in the part i usually have. The missing portion is the size of my small fingernail. Next day it is the size of a golf ball. Next day it is as big as a baseball..cripes whats going on.

Went to the doctor and learned a new word Alopecia.

Went to Joe Shmo the barber and he said he could fix it with a different style and we could do a comb-over.Told Mr. Schmo no way and 2 days later my entire cranium was covered with 1/16" of hair. Went for the cut right off the bat. While having my son do the cut we realize that I am pretty even with missing portions/patches on both sides. Totally was not ready for that.

Found out my head looks normal (what is normal)

Doctor put me on Rogain and said in 50% of the cases it does grow back in 6-9 months, but to what extent he was not certain.

I currently have sprouts on one side but the other side is still sleeping I guess. The side not doing anything itches considerably.

Managed to go to church 2X and caught dozens of people staring and I just smile. Some asked later if I was going through Chemo. Thankfully no

My job allows me to wear a hardhat or baseball cap 24/7. Family states that it looks fine but when i show individuals that have never seen something like this, I get the "Holy Cr _ _! word"

Can't believe how much colder I feel. In time I assume that also will change.

I will give it until June thats 7 months then shave completely if it does not improve. I used to be told and thought I was pretty good looking and then found this site and maybe I still am

Rick - don't lose hope man. It's hell (yes, literally hell) when you first find out. It seems that we've all gone through nearly the same storyline of shock, denile, anger, depression, etc. It seems that you're coping quite well, and I hope that you don't experience to many of the "downs" of this. However, though there's never a gaurantee with alopecia, there really is hope that your hair will return. So far, knock on wood, mine has slowly started coming back (6 months into this now)...have a blog on this. Anyway, hang in there.

Rick - I can only echo what John said. It's a rocky road and totally unpredictable so hang in there. AW was a great support network to me and I hope that you find it to be the same for you. Everybody's experience is different and I hope that yours is just a temporary blip.

Take care
Robert
