About Me:
I have androgenic alopecia, which I have had for 20 years and have been wearing wigs for 2 years. For me it has been a process of accepting my hair loss, and being comfortable in my own skin. I have come to love my wigs and I love to wear a different one each day of the week depending on my mood. I am a registered nurse and I work in a hospital with people who are very supportive. I love life and I am so blessed to have an awesome career and a wonderful family.

Mommy is special

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 3:00pm 5 Comments

I have a 4 year old and a 10 year old. My 4 year old wonderful little boy is having difficulty understanding why Mommy is different than everyone else. He keeps asking "when are you going to grow hair, real hair like mine?" "Why do you wear wigs?" I've tried explaining that mommy is special and I will never have hair like his. Anyone have any advice on this? He seems to be bothered that I am different. I want him to see that everyone is unique in their own way and that it is okay. He is only…

To shave or not to shave

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 10:00pm 12 Comments

I am thinking about shaving what little hair I have left to buy a freedom wig. I have wore synthetics and human hair for the past 3 years but can't seem to find one that will stay in place. This is very important to me because I have small children and we are active. It is not a good feeling to be cruising through wal-mart and feel your hair slipping back from your head. If anyone has experience with the silicone cap I would love to hear from you. Does the hair hold up? My human hair wig has…

Hi Cindy thanks for the friend add and glad you found this great support site. We're always looking for the 'perfect' wig, but in my experience there is no such thing. A wig is a wig is a wig...however we can get ones that still look great. My aim was to have the thinnest base possible that attached with the least amount of trouble so I could take it off each night. So, I discovered thin skin base wigs and have the hair injected into this base so that it looks like it is growing out of your own scalp. I tried the lace wigs, they were good but tangled and were a little boofy for me - I like the hair to lay flatter. Also I had to glue or tape them on and I found that was a pain in the bum when I like to take them off each night...I hate sleeping in a wig. The thin skin is a little like a suction wig but not as secure. I can get away without taping it down as it kind of sticks to the scalp. Sometimes if it's exceptionally windy I'll use a little Got2B hair gel around the front and sides which keeps it on and will wash out with soap and water. I like your profile pic, is that your own hair or a wig?
