Hi Jennifer, My daughter started with 2 spots when she was 13. She has cycled in and out of several spots twice with total regrowth. This time she has lost pretty much all of her hair and has been wearing a wig since Sept. It has been a long and painful road, but she is doing well now. She had cortisone injections on and off for almost 3 years and I would not recommend them for your son. In hindsight I think that may have been the most difficult part of all this for her. I'm so sorry your son is getting teased. Is it possible for you to drive him to school? My daughter was not teased, but she was able to cover her spots until this school year. Now her wig is so beautiful you would never know. Although she is pretty open about it, she wants to raise awareness about alopecia and has told quite a few people. She is also much older than your son and kids seem to be more accepting in high school. If there is any way I can help, please let me know. Lisa

Hi Jennifer, My daughter is 16. She has been cycling in and out of alopecia since she was 13. She has totalis now and it has been a very long and difficult road. She is doing very well, I am so proud of her, she is an amazing girl. I'm sure she would be happy to talk to your son if you think that might help. I'm so sorry he is getting teased, kids can be so hurtful. I have gone to a couple of the rochester support group meetings, but they didn't seem to help me. I found a lot of support and comfort on this sight. Please feel free to contact me if you need to talk.

Being teased by other kids is such a problem. I wrote a chapter about that in my book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" It's so good that he's getting counseling and you sound like you are very supportive. It's so hard for parents because we can't kiss it and make it well. But you can take comfort in the likelihood that one of the lessons he learns as he goes through this is compassion for people who don't "fit in" or look different. He will grow into a kinder, more loving person.
