Still searching for a group close enough to get together with or at least a friend for Kira. She is up to 80% Hair loss and considering shaving her head. She is alternating between feeling special, and heart breaking sobs because she is different. I wish I could fix it all for her... Friday is her 12th birthday, would that I could make it all better for her as the ultimate gift...

Birthday ideas: mall makeover, shopping trip with a teen neighbor or relative for an outfit, fancy restaurant and live theatre performance in all that finery with friends or cousins along. Sleepover with pizza and decorating cookies afterwards. Pancake or waffle party in the morning, with a favorite movie or two and hot cocoa. Don't forget the marshmallows. Making up holiday songs with new lyrics about rock and movie stars, then a pretend variety show performance of the songs. Nothing related to hair...unless they write the songs about all those stars waking up Christmas morning with none, and what THEY would sing!!!
Our summer went so fast and I haven't been on the site. Alyssa is doing very well. The injections are given once a month and I also use Rogaine (very sparingly) too. Her hair is growing back nicely, of course this disease is so unpredictable that I am always concerned it will start falling out again. But for now, we are happy with the progress. Before she gets the injections, we use Lidocaine 2 hours beforehand to numb the area, this seems to help her get through it. Whether this is the right approach, I don't know, but for now it is our course of action. I hope Kira has a great timr at school, and maybe the girls can write to each other again. Thanks for writing!
Barbara
I am interning with ashland chemical at the domtar mill, but I grew up Duke Center so I am from the area
I saw your post on the Pennsylvania group and wanted to let you know, I will be living in ridgway this summer. I am 21 and have had alopecia areata since I was 2, so if you or you daughter want some one to talk to feel free to get a hold of me.

I totally understand all your feelings all too well! It is devastating to feel helpless and although she is still acting like her usual upbeat self, I worry for the future as she gets older! We have been doing the injections for 3 months, but I don't see anything yet. Let me know how the shampoo works. My doc also told me to try the rogaine, but when reading that it isn't for kids, as well as you have to continue it or the hair falls out again, I felt it was not worth it. I am glad the girls are having fun writing to each other. Have fun in Tennessee. Will speak to you soon.

Your daughter is amazing and wonderful!
How are you both doing today?
