I've suffered from trichotillomania for a little over 30 years and only recently found out that my hair pulling was actually a condition that afflicted many people and had a name.
I only pull the hair from my head and I believe my case is milder than I have seen around but it is still bad enough to cause severe thinning, breakage and small, almost bald, spots in certain areas of my hair.
I am always trying to fight the urgency to take my hand to my hair, but it is mostly an unconscious behavior and, when I catch myself, not only have I already pulled several strands of hair, but also find it difficult to stop the pulling.
I have tried many strategies to stop doing this, but the only thing that really works is not to have access to my hair by wearing wigs or scarves, or by having my hands occupied with something else.

I just wanted to say HI and welcome you! I actually have done a lot of research on Trich because of my obsession with my hair not growing back when I mistakenly pull some out. I have Chronic TE and have developed OCD and PTSD from the experience of hair loss. I also have Trichodynia or Scalp Dysthesia which means "SCALP PAIN"... If you ever want to chat, please add me as a friend!
