My first YouTube video from August 2008 showing how I tie Turkish scarves, and talking about going out in public bald.

The hand-crocheted edging is called "oya" and the way I tie the scarves is based on the way Turkish and Bulgarian women traditionally tie their scarves. I learned about these through my folk dance activies years ago, and they came in handy when I lost my hair!

The woman I bought the scarves shown in the video from isn't selling them currently, but there are other sellers on eBay. Let me know if you need any advice on what to look for.

Thank you Mary, for showing how this Scarf/Bandanna is wrapped and put on correctly.
I would do this for years, without any idea if I was doing it right,
With sadness and hurt, that I was doing it in fear for others perception about me.
I would be so uncomfortable, even angry at my self and others for projecting their opinion onto me.
Forcing me to Cover Up.
Even looking at myslef as I wrapped my head, made me feel worthless.
Just as you, I too...eventually... decided to take the Plunge and go without head covering.
I wouldn't conform any longer...as It was about time I faced my own insecurities.
I followed my Human Right to be Free!
That was 1982...and it's been a long Journey...some days good...some days bad!
Yes, If we could have hair back, it would be a wonderful thing.
I could even learn to "FLiP MY HAiR"

Like I said "DON'T BECOME A PRiSONER IN YOUR OWN LiFE"
"DON'T LET THEiR PERCEPTiONS...WRiTE THE STORY iN YOUR BOOK"
"TRiLLiONS OF TEARS.....FLOODiNG THE YEARS!

Hi Mary, thanks for your great video. Where did you get your scarves from? I've been looking for something similar in NZ for those times that it's a bit cooler (it is winter downunder right now) but haven't found anything. Any tips? Cheers, Pamela

Hi Pamela,

Unfortunately, the nice lady in Wisconsin who I bought all those scarves from doesn't seem to be there anymore...my emails haven't reached her. There are Turkish "oya" scarves like these on eBay, but I liked hers best after trying several sellers. If you search online or on eBay for "Turkish oya" you'll find sellers. Be aware of the size...they vary quite a bit. As I said on the video, 31-33" square work best on my head for how I tie them. Let me know how you do. Mary

Hi Mary! Thank you for making a wonderful video! I wear scarves sometimes but didnt know quite how to get the volume I liked or make them look as stylish whilst being comfortable. Thanks to you - I now do and I feel great in them. Hope you are well?

Hi Kirsteen - glad you like the video! I made it a little over a year ago. I still wear the scarves when I want something on my head, and when it's cool enough. But, I'm mostly going out bald these days - there are recent photos on my page of me performing in SD and LA. Best, Mary

Hi Mary! Living in Scotland, most days are cold enough for me to wear scarves ha ha! I have been going out "..au naturalle" over the last week when the air's not too cold - it's great not to have to think about what to put on my head - it's like a weight's been lifted and i'm free again. It's thanks to this site and all the inspirational members that gave me the courage to do so. I looked at your photos, they're great. How long have you been performing? Take care, K x

Yes, Kirsteen...it IS like a weight being lifted to have the freedom to be bald in public, or wear something.

I've been performing as a drummer with various bands for about 25 years, and teaching folk dancing for over 30. I used to do a fair amount of Scottish country dancing - great stuff!

Thanks so much, Lynn.

I really understant that going out bald isn't for everyone. We all need to do what is most comfortable for us.

I will say that it wasn't easy for me at first to go bald, but it just got easier every time I did it. I took baby steps, and now it's just the way I am.
