The View upset quite a few members of Alopecia World this week. After announcing that the newly crowned Miss Delaware Kayla Martell has alopecia areata, the show's hosts veered into a discussion about whether black or white women look better bald! After viewing this controversial clip, please share your thoughts. If you would like to send feedback directly to the View, go here.

I'm not really offended. It's true, some of us may look a little weird with no hair, but for me, that's what makes us all special too. Small minds are just that, small minds. Miss Delaware looks great with or without hair. I'm glad we're getting some publicity!!

I did do my duty of contacting the View...here is what I wrote to them. ;o)

Just wanted to comment on the Miss Delaware/Alopecia Areata segment. Not ALL white women look ridiculous bald. Maybe your hosts could go to http://www.alopeciaworld.net and checkout the women, in pictures, on that website. I have Alopecia Universalis, total loss of ALL body hair, I don't think I look weird. I've embraced my God given beauty. If this is the way He intends for me to look, I think people should be ashamed for poking fun about it. That's just me though!

Well done, Mallory! Everyone should write.

I continue to believe that the only reason that bald women (any color) look "weird" to people is because there are so FEW of us out in public. Kayla Martell is helping alter this perception by appearing in public bald - as are all of us who do it. Happy International Alopecia Day July 17 - let's get OUT there and show the world what a bald woman looks like! Mary

I'm not offended however they missed an educational opportunity. Perhaps they should invite her on the show.

Now that would be absolutely wonderful to have Kayla on the show...this show is shown in Australia also and probably many more countries around the world. Personally I think any publicity is good publicity and lets face it...we may be okay [at times] with our bald chromes but the majority of people never see a bald woman unless she has cancer! That's the reason, or part of the reason I don't like wearing scarves or hats but prefer wigs when outside otherwise it looks like I have cancer. I dont want people's pity.

"...the majority of people never see a bald woman unless she has cancer!"

Ladies, this isn't going to change until WE make it change by simply letting the world see more bald women as we are - the way bald men do. I know (believe me, I KNOW) how hard it is at first. But, it's up to us. International Alopecia Day is Saturday, July 17. Have a large or small event where you live, try going OUT uncovered, take a photo for the post-Day video slide show. We can change things.

May we never forget that, in a free society, people have the freedom to boycott as well as freedom of speech.

I agree rj, and in my world I'm having far bigger emotional issues to deal with than alopecia.
