Hello, everyone I am new to this site so far I really like it....Well I am lost right at this moment...I have a daughter that is 9 and has had Alopecia Areata since she was 4 years old then I have a 5 year old son that has AA as well and has had it since 2009 and last but not least my baby boy that is 3 years old has had Alopecia universalis since 2008. I have been told this is very rare to have siblings with this condition but I guess what I really need is more information...my daughter was diagnosed with AA by a dermatologist as well as my 5 year old. now as for my 3 year old he was diagnosed by his pediatric Dr. I am just lost because I have a gut feeling something else may be going on.....any advice would greatly be appreciated....
Thanks
Liz

Liz, read all the recent blogs here about genes and research.
I have been reading a lot of interesting findings.... thanks
Liz, I am no expert but since alopecia has a genetic basis, it seems possible that siblings would all be affected and nothing else is going on. I think if I were you , I'd write to some researchers in this area. They might be very interested in 3 siblings who all have alopecia, and in turn they might be able to help you make sense of this. Start with Dr. Angela Christiano ( her e-mail is available via a google search) at Columbia and Dr. George Cotsarelis at University of Pa. And I am very sorry that you are having to deal with this.
I agree with Lisa. I would contact the people she has provided to you. My heart goes out to you for having 3 children with Alopecia. My son age 7 has AU since age 6 months of age. My daughter age 5 doesn't and asks me if she will lose her hair. My honest answer is, I don't know because it can happen to anyone at any age. But I tell her not to worry about it at the moment. Why worry about something that hasn't happened. Thomas loves himself and is very confident. Told him about the latest research on genetics being a link and that may mean a cure in the future. Said he didn't care for a cure, he loves himself bald and that he loves the fact that he doesn't need to wash or comb his hair. Now that's one kid who doesn't want to miss his cartoons, LOL. Check out his article at www.mycentraljersey.com click on health tab. Article came out June 29th.

Hang in there.
I've only ever heard of this happening to one other family in my area and all three of her children have alopecia as well as the mother. Apparently they lost their hair shortly after being immunized and she's quite sure that had something to do with it but of course no one really knows for sure. I know I myself was adopted as a baby and lost my hair during the immunization period as well and just found out in the last few years that my biological grandmother also had AU like me. Again, more research is needed. At least your children aren't as alone as some of the other children with alopecia who never get to meet other kids with it, there's strength in numbers. Keep your chin up! :)
Hi Liz

I can imagine that you are feeling quite concerned, but I want to reassure you that in my experience with the people I look after this is something that can and does happen to some families, not many but a small number. I have about three lots of mothers and daughters that have this condition and also one family that all the siblings have some form of alopecia - and that is all they have (there is nothing more sinister going on with them - just as a way of reassurance for you).

If I can ever be of further assistance please feel free to pop in and say hi. My daughter has had alopecia for the last 7 years and as a mum I understand some of the challenges you may be facing.

Take care

Rosy
