Alopecia and teeth

Hi,

Has anyone heard about teeth infections casuing alopecia?

I'd read about the connection but it is apparently a myth. I asked my dentist about it and she had never heard of any connection but checked my teeth and found nothing wrong.

This is actually pretty interesting and I have heard this before. My dad always tells me that your body is just like a car. If you do not give it the right kind of oil it won't run right! His analogy is referring to food and health. I think that it is not the cause of Alopecia but I am sure it does not help it.

Oh my gosh, that's weird. A freind and I were just talking about that yesterday! I had never heard of it before but she had said something about it. Could this be true???? I'll have to do some research on it.

Yes, AA can be caused by teeth infection, there was a paper published some year ago
by spanish researchers and there are case reports of people
who had remission of AA after proper teeth treatment.

It's weird but I heard this before or read it somewhere but then when I tried to research it I never found it again. I had major dental work when I was 36, then I started noticing the loss of hair more and more. tthen it started thinning and now of cause it is gone. If you really find anythign - please post/share.

The association of alopecia areata and infectious foci of dental origin is relatively common, and may be explained by the autoimmune nature of the disorder. We describe a case of alopecia areata with no apparent cause and that was effectively resolved by eliminating a focalized dental infection via endodontic treatment. The presence of common immune mediators in the pathogenesis of both alopecia areata and dental infection could account for the dental origin of the hair loss. In this sense, patients with localized alopecia should be subjected to careful exploration of the oral cavity in search of possible dental infections.

Hi I have had alopecia for 10 years im 29 and don't have a single filling. In my case I doubt my alopecia has anything to do with teeth.

Thank-You all so much for your replies.
I have heard a little about this and in my situation, could be true I guess, I have to get a lot of work done to my teeth. Im 30 and have not really looked after my teeth (sinse leaving home!), for no other reason than the fear that most people hold in going to see the dentist. Im lucky they still look good!
So Ive made my first appointment to go next week and start having them fixed up. I know I need to have a couple of filings and need to get 2 wisdom teeth out.
My alopecia started at the begining of this year well at least that is when i noticed the first patch. I got a couple more and general thining all over. All the patches have grown back and I have new regrowth everywhere. But in the last couple of months i have noticed my hair starting to come out more and my teeth have started to ache again and causing me trouble.

So I will keep you posted with my trip..s to the dentist.

yes. there have been documented cases where tooth infections have caused alopecia episodes.

It could be a coincident, but my daughter's first circular bald spot came after she had work done on her teeth. She recently had three teeth pulled and her hair loss has circled around her whole head from her ears on up.
