I am 22 years old and I just found out that I have alopecia areata. I found my first patch in early October and it stayed the same up until about a week ago. It grew an inch in diameter and I also found a second spot about the size of a quarter. Luckily I have long, thick hair so I can hide my spots. But I don't know for how long. I am really down about the whole thing and couldn't really use some hope. Are there any of you with success stories or advice? Please and thank you

Thank you for your response. My daughter had her spots injected, the spots have not gotten bigger, but she continues to lose hair all over her scalp. Is that really alopecia areata? If not, what is it? What can be done about it?
I hope this message finds you in hopeful spirits. I created an account just to reply to this thread. I got hit with with alopecia barbae on my face and on my eyebrow in Nov 2016. I never went to see a doctor and I never took chemicals.
For 1+ year I shaved everyday and lost confidence in myself. There was a point 6-7 months in, I couldn't look in the mirror. I had 2 big patches on the right and left jaw line and almost half my eyebrow on my left side was gone.
I did some readings on naturopath and spoke with a girl who was studying to be a naturopathic doctor. For about another 6-7 months, I used lavender oil to put on my patches. I also drank cayenne pepper and tumeric 4-to-6 times a day. I also went to a clinic that does colon flushing. the clinic put a tube up my a** and flushed all the bad stuff out of my body. I was also eating raw garlic cloves. I was also consuming about 10k-20K IU of vitamin D daily taking a fat like olive oil along with the vitamin D.
My facial hair grew back, my eye brow filled back in . I haven't had another remission since. I still drink cayenne pepper , not as much as I should but consume it often with foods.
I remember I stopped eating fast food and heavily cut back on the junk food. I was eating beans, vegetables a lot. you need to overload your body with vitamins.
this is conquerable. If I could do it, you can too . I hope this helps anyone reading this.
I am logging in just to elaborate a little more. I wrote the post before bed last night.
The cayenne pepper and tumeric -- I mixed these 2 combinations (about half a teaspoon of cayenne and 3/4 a teaspoon of tumeric) in a glass with juice and drank it like a shot. Sometimes I would put a little more cayenne/tumeric in the glass depending how I felt. It burns but eventually you get used to it. I would drink half a litre of juice sometimes to calm the burning sensation. I did this in the morning when I first woke up. There is a ton of information on google about the benefits of consuming
The garlic cloves, I would eat 2-3 a day raw. I would put the garlic clove in my mouth along with juice and chew the garlic clove with the juice in my mouth. It burns but eventually you get used to it.
*the cayenne/tumeric/garlic, eventually you can feel it having a positive effect on your body. I don't think putting these on your skin benefits. i think it actually made it worse for me so I stopped.
The lavender oil, I was recommended by the naturopath to add jaboba oil along with teetree and other others but I was broke and didn't have the funds for a big budget. I put the lavender oil on my face as many times as I could a day. I would walk around with the bottle in my pocket.
The colon cleanse - I had to do about 3-4 trips to the clinic to completely flush out my body. We have a lot of bacteria hanging out in our bodies. I was also doing those 1-2 week body cleanses every 2-3 months.
My diet rigorously changed. I was eating nothing but vegetables with the occasional meat, fast food, junk food. there are chemicals in fast/junk food which can hinder the healing process of your immune system.
I was also using Moroccan oil on my face as there are fats in the oil that can promote healthy hair growth
The vitamin D, I was told by a few people I shouldnt do this but researching google showed there was no overdose even at 100K IU
I also went to a chinese herbal store. I googled chinese herbals for immune system/alopecia and drank this stuff for 1-2 months. It tasted horrible.
I can confidently say a combination of everything is what cured my autoimmune.

I've had great success with steroid shots directly into the scalp. For me the Alopecia comes and goes in varying degrees. I've tried:
steroid shots inn scalp- Work but the shot are a little unpleasant but not bad.
Rogain - Seemed to work a little. Used as a supplement the scalp shots. Use an hour before bed or it stains the pillowcase. Made my head itchy. When I went completely bald stopped using. Hair grew back after 6 months, never started using again.
Corticosteroids shots in butt - Didn't see any real benefit
Clobetasol Topical (steroid) - Works to a degree. Used as supplement to Steroid scalp shots. Seems to work best on my eyebrows when I lose them.
Immune suppression drugs - Worked great for 6-8 months then it stopped working completely. Had terrible nausea every time I took them in the morning and night.
Otezla - Too early to tell. Need a few more week
Forgot to add 1 thing. You will see a lot of snake oil on here. People claiming diet, flax seeds, gut pills, leaky gut syndrome cures, acai berry, ozone therapy, acupuncture, supplements, fish oil, holistic therapy, probiotics, caster oil, cider vinegar, garlic, onion juice, turmeric, cured their alopecia after 6 months.
That is sort of the way Alopecia Areata cycles, especially after a lot of hair loss suddenly, it usually takes about 6 months to grow back. Helen Of Troy on the 1st page is a perfect example. For me, I had little patches of Alopecia hair loss for years, then all of the sudden went completely bald within a week. In 6 months it grew all back. Did the steroid scalp shots help? Probably a little but it was mostly the cycle of Alopecia. If their is not a research article from a legitimate Medical Journal (ex: Journal of Dermatology) it is probably snake oil. The leading researcher in Alopecia is Angela Christiano, at Columbia University, who herself suffers from Alopecia Areata.
This post is great. I completely agree with you. Quick question: they say AA has a poorer prognosis if onset is at a younger age. What is the definition of “younger age”?
lol @ calling natures remedies snake oil. I could totally rip you and your post apart but I will just accept your cognitive bias you are locked in the matrix

Hi, I have alopecia since I was 9 years old, I have tried everything to cure it. in 2011 I have tried bee stings on different places of my scalp (it really hurts and i don't recommended it) and at the same week I applied a wood tar (from a tree called Atem عتم) which can be found in Southern Saudi Arabia and Oman. I had my hair back within one month. The hair didn't start white then brown then turns black, but it was black and strong from the beginning as if I was shaving. I continued using the tar for about a month and half.
A friend of mine, tried the wood tar ONLY (he is based on Turkey, so not sure if what he tried is from the same tree) he got the hair back within a 2-3 months.
Speaking of this tar from this Atem tree, it has been used to cure many skin diseases long time back.
The negative side of this tar that it smell really strong, and it doesn't go away easily.
I can’t find anything on the internet about this. How did you get the tar and how did you even learn about it? I’m so curious!
