I am an SGI Buddhist living in Richmond VA. I developed Alopecia Universalis about two years ago. I was wondering if any other SGI members have lost all their hair or are dealing with Alopecia Areata. For anyone else reading this post .. we practice Nichiren Buddhism and chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.

Interesting question. Neither Cheryl or I practice Nichiren Buddhism, but a couple of months ago we randomly stopped at an SGI community center and spoke at length with a staff member there. After briefly explaining Nichiren Buddhism and the purpose of the center, she gave us a welcome pack, which included a booklet and DVD, and invited us to attend a home gathering. We plan to visit again, especially since we always find various understandings of the idea of tapping one's inner resources to be very intriguing. :-)
Wow. That's very cool. I find this to be a very empowering practice. I tried on and off to chant about my alopecia with the idea that I could "flip the switch" in my body back to where my immune system is OK with my hair. But it was difficult to chant with a lot of intensity behind it because I would come back to the feeling that "it's just my hair" and move on to chanting about something else. However, in this past week it dawned on me that I can chant for a treatment that would benefit everyone with alopecia. That is very much in line with the Buddhist concept of "turning karma into mission". I hope you guys do take the opportunity to go to an SGI activity. There is usually a good discussion about how we can best live our lives as human beings right now in this moment.
Hi Shera,
I've been practicing Nichiren Buddhism for 2 yrs. now & really have found what I've been looking for. I really love the SGI community & it's teachings, esp. the chapter study meetings. I've had AA since I was 18 mos. & have been universalis for 30 yrs. I don't chant about regrowing my hair, but chant & pray for others with AA. I live in the San Francisco area (the city the Pres. Ikeda visited first in the US) and am involved with the local SGI. I've talked w/other SGI members who have AA & we all agree that SGI teachings help us look for the 'benefit' behind the wall. Good luck with your practice & let me know if you get to SF in the future.
