Lately I have been losing my eyelashes, it's been kinda hard on me because that is the one thing i did have left after losing my hair and eyebrows. I have always loved my eyelashes cause they always made me feel beautiful even being bald. Almost half of the top lid on both of my eyes are gone. I have been using eye liner, it kinda works but i don't think it will work as well if i lose all of my eyelashes. I'm really scared of losing all of them, i think it makes my eyes look really weird without them. Does anyone understand what i am talking about?

Yes! I hated losing my eyelashes! I use eyeliner now, and I think it looks okay, but nothing will ever compare to the way I felt when I had all of my lashes. Lately, some have been sprouting up. Have you heard of Latisse? It's a new FDA product for eyelashes. You have to get a prescription from your Dr. and it isn't covered by insurance. I think it was about $120.00, but it's suppose to make your eyelashes grow in more full and much longer, and alopecia patients have had luck with it. Since you still have all but half on the top, I think you'll experience a lot of luck with this. Talk to your dermatologist about it. I am on day 5 using Latisse. I'll let you know my progress. Hope this helps a little!
I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes a couple of years ago. I had permanent makeup done on both. I recommend having the eyebrows done but I would not have my eyes done again. It was very painfull and looked hideous after it was done. In a few weeks it did fade a bit but I am not happy with it and i put a skin tone conceler on the lower lash area. I still feel that the lower lash area is too heavy looking. I would say....stick with eye liner. As for some medicine to grow lashes....I tried that for my eyebrows. The first time it worked. The second time had no effect. If you are destined to lose all hair no chemical is going to counteract the fact that you have an auto immine disorder.
Yes, I do understand! :0) I have AU - so my lashes and brows are gone. As a blonde with fair lashes, I loved my mascara and having the lashes frame the eyes. I don't know if there is any way to control losing your lashes. I started to wear more dramatic eyeliner and wear subtle shades of eyeshadow to shape my eyes. Without the lashes, to get emphasis on the eyes, you'll need to look elsewhere. You can play around with shadows, with liners, I even take mascara and sort of dab the brush on my bottom lash line - it gives the illusion of lashes. False eyelashes can be a good substitute but I find the glue bothers my eyes.

At first I would worry so much about how I looked but then I realized most people don't notice. Honestly. I've been standing a foot away from a person and I tell them I have alopecia and have lost my eyelashes, they do a double-take and stare, like 10 inches away from my face, at me saying, "I know you have no eyelashes but I can't tell!"

Really. This sort of thing happens to me a lot. It's bizarre. I will say - I draw on my brows, I draw on my lashes, I am wearing a wig - can you not tell I have alopecia? And the answer is always the same - people can't really tell at all until you point it out to them.

I wish I could say something more comforting. I just understand the lashes- thing - I miss mine too. :0) I hope you find a routine that works for you.
Good video Butterfly!
Losing lashes is prob. our hardest thing to deal with. Tuesday is right though..people do not notice, but I know you do. I would definatly suggest liner on the top and bottom and experiment with different kinds. Liquid, pencil, soft pencil, until lyou find what works for you. Also, false lashes are great. Honestly, it took me FOREVER ( prolly about 20 times) before I really got it down. They are not easy to put on and if you dont put them on correctly, they can be uncomfortable. Just practice tho, and you will get it. Good luck!
My derm wants me to try the Lattise. But she won't have till the end of the month. I havent decided if I want to go through the hasel though. I haven't done any kind of treatment since 96 or 97. But she want me to be her first Patient to try it being as i am her only alopeica patient. My eyelashes are currently falling out yet again. Well they are doing weird thing this time. they all completly fell out in a matter of two days and then grew back right away and now are slowly falling in my normal loosing pattern. I had my eyelashes for a couple years and then was only missing half of one for a year. So in the mean time It is eyeliner for work and flase lash for when I go out. I attempted them for eveydya and it was too much hassel for me. I figure other than me if i have the eyeliner no one really notices if i have lashes or not. Same with my eyebrows.
Hi Kayden,
My 13 year old has had AU for about 2 years. She started out with eyeliner and now wears Blinkies eyelashes (www.blinkies.com) She puts them on herself and it does not take long. Initially, she had to practice but once she got the hang of it, it was no problem. I've had a couple of make up artists come and teach her eye make up. It was very helpful and made things fun. If you'd like, you can email her (she does not use this site) and she can tell you how she learned and what she does. Her pictures are on my page. Let me know.

I know how u feel. Wen i was loosing my eyelashes, i used to think the same that i m loosing the beauty of my eyes. Wen all of them feel, for sometime i did feel weird. But, now i wear eyeliner & it makes my eyes look pretty as it did before. So, now I dont feel as much bad as i used to.
Kayden, i can now count the number of remaining eyelashes on both upper and lower lids!!!!!! sucks! think there are no more left on the lower left eye, tho. I use a waterproof liner(cheap.....wet and wild, really works) and smudge some dark shadow especially on the bottom to try to recreate the shadow of lashes.....people havent a clue...but i did buy a set or two of demi lashes to slap on the tops...only wear them when i am in the mood. now i dont have to shave my legs or pits...or wax my chin!!! that is the upside! haha.......bk
thank you sooo much everyone! never in my wildest dreams did i imagine that i would get so many responses~all of which are very helpful! thanks again to you all who replied to my discussion. you have made me excited and made my day!
I have AU and got the permanent makeup done as well. The eyebrows came out great, it's nice not to have to deal with them, and I'm a terrible artist. I got the eyeliner done, but it didn't come out as well. The top eyeliner was OK, but the bottom faded right away, even with touch-ups. I just pencil it in every morning. I think if you work with your eyebrows in particular, I agree that no one really notices you don't have lashes. The worst part of losing lashes is the functional part. I have bad allergies, and I never realized how much lashes kept the gunk out of my eyes. I have to use more eyedrops now especially during allergy season to deal with it. If I could have one thing back it would be my eyelashes, mostly for that reason. But there are a lot of products out there to work with. Keep trying until you find some things you're happy with. Good luck!
thanks for the experience! it helped a lot.
