I started this episode of alopecia in feb of this year. I have two spots that seemed to just keep getting bigger...went to the doc in may and he said my thyroid was underactive and put me on synthroid...its now the end of aug and i have no hair anywhere on my body...has this happened to anyone else, i keep asking all my doctors if its possible that the synthroid made it worse...never had alopecia like this before! i dont know what type of doctor to go see anymore i've been to so many already and they come up with nothing...any suggestions???

I really don't think the synthroid is to blame for the hairloss. It is common for those with alopecia to have a thyroid condition as well and is most likely coincidental. I had wondered the same thing myself because I started taking pills for my thyroid around the same time that I went AT at 13 but I've been off medication for about 10 years and my hair is still doing its own thing (the levels for needing meds changed in 2001 and I was given the option of not having to take it anymore because I was borderline). Even if it was the medicine (which isn't likely), would you stop taking it and risk your health just so your hair could potentially grow back?
I've been told by a few doctors that thyroid conditions don't cause alopecia and alopeica doesn't cause thyroid conditions. They are just common to have together. I've had both alopeica and hypothyroidism for 7 years. I found out about the thyroid when they did blood tests after being diagnosed with alopecia. As for doctors, go see an endocrinologist for your thyroid and an dermatologist for your alopecia. I hate to say it, but there is no telling what path alopeica is going to take.
I agree with you Kristen!
I was diagnosed with thyroid condition over 20 years ago the first time I started losing my hair was a few
Months after. Of course my hair grew back but I lost it again. My dermatologist thought the Alopecia was caused by my thyroid condition and years of chronic anemia. But who knows what caused this crazy disorder
I made the mistake of stopping the thyroid meds. Please don't! I thought the same thing!!I became very ill and obese...all water weight. Drs said I was lucky.
