Hi, I just recently joined and wanted to say Hi. I was diagnosed with diffuse alopecia areata a few months ago and am rapidly losing my hair. I am wondering if anyone else has or has had this diffuse type all over thinning and whether they eventually lost all their hair. This agonizing slow thinning is driving me crazy. I have to wear a hair piece now because my hair is so thin and see-through and not knowing what lies ahead is really hard.

Hi Bekindtoearth. I'm sorry you are going through this too. How old are you. I have only had it for nine minths and have lost about 50 percent. I am getting steroid injections whiched helped my eyebrows, I lost both of them. I now have a thin eyebrow back for each one. Not great, but better than nothing. They helped my hair a little, but not much. I am now on Prednisone, but just started. so far, not much improvement. I also use Rogaine, which may be helping a little, but again, I only started a month ago and it takes longer to see reaults. I have also noticed that I only have to shave my legs once a week now and the hair grows very slow. I am seeing my derm today, will let you know what she says. What have you tried. It sounds like yours is moving faster. Do you wear a full wig? What kind. I think I may need one soon. I cant stand my hair, even at home. I know how scarey this is. Feel free to ask any questions or if you just need a friend. Do you know what triggered yours? Mine seemed to start out of nowhere.
Hi again, Bekindtoearth, btw I love your name. I wanted to ask you if you have ever gotten injections or if you were just put on prednisone. I definitely think the injections are worth it for brows. Let me know how the prednisone works out for you. I think my doc shoukd have continued with me, but I dont know what is best anymore. I think rogaine is worth trying and I also use nioxin shampoo and a coal tar shampoo once a week. Where did you get your custom wig from. I also wear a buff at home, it is way more comfy. Is your husband supportive. Mine is, but no one knows how hard this is unless they go through it. The rest of my family does not know yet and I am dredding upcoming holidays.
You are so lucky to live near the Dov salon, they are supposed to be great. Definitely use the nioxin. I am e-friends with dmf on this site, I think you have heard from her too. She also uses nioxin. I think it helps with shedding. We all three have DAA in varying stages. Are you on oral prednisone now. Let me know how it works for you, my derm is reluctant to continue it for me and I may have to see someone different. I wish none of us had to deal with this, but I think you are going in the right direction.
Hi Bek. So sorry you have this too. How did your Derm determine it was DAA. The only way to be sure is a scalp biopsy. How much hair have you lost so far, any eyebrows. I am getting steroid shots and using Rogaine. The shots help a little, but since it is diffuse, it is impossible to get shots everywhere. There does not seem to be an easy answer.
I have that too...so annoying! Hair everywhere! This summer my hair filled in completely now it's almost gone again :(
Hi kteacher. I am sorry you have to deal with diffuse AA also. How long have you had it? My hair is starting to fill in now also but I live in fear of it falling out again. Have you tried any treatments?

The only thing that has worked for me is not working, staying home with my girls and eating a really clean diet. I tried shots, all sorts of creams, lotions, potions, etc. I tried prednisone and prednisone shots. Nothing really seems to heal it except for low stress and eating right. Unfortunately, I have to work right now while my husband is getting his phd, but I'm hoping it will grow back again when he's done! What are you doing to make yours fill in better now? Have a great day!!

I started on prednisone and methotrexate together. The prednisone dd not seem to help but the methotrexate stopped it from falling and I am still on the methotrexate. I also try to eat fruit veggies and lean neat for protein. I also take a supplement called bovine colostrum which has really helped I think. It is such a frustrating condition. I wear a topper mostly to add volume.

yes i have it! its good to finally meet someone who has this too i dont have bald spots just all over alopecia

Hi Workingonthezen.  Sorry you are going through this too.  I also lost my eyebrows, but they are starting to fill in again.  It took a long time, though and I got monthly injections in each brow every 6 weeks.  I did not lose the lashes, but they turned almost white.  Also lost leg and body hair.  It has been two years now, but I am seeing signs of regrowth of both scalp and body hair, although it is nowhere near normal yet.  Try seeing another dermatologist, there are some really good ones out there who actually care about treating AA, but you have to shop around.

At its worst, I lost about 60 percent of my scalp hair, both eyebrows, all underarm hair and very sparse leg hair.  Then I started on Methotrexate along with scalp and brow injections.  I also took some supplements, Colostrum, Kalawalla (an immune modulator), hair vitamins, Vitamin D and B-complex.  I also tried to improve my diet by eating more veggies and fruit and cutting down on sugar, carbs, no coffee and eating more quality red meat which my derm suggested, since I am really not a meat eater.  My hair stopped falling out and my hair has started filling in again, but slooowly.  Eyebrows are slowly returning and leg and arm hair is trying, although what has come back is very thin and transparent. Derm says we are on the right track, but who knows.  I wear a clip in topper because it is still so thin.  I do have a lot on top though.  I was also very anemic which may have triggered this, so I take 60mgs of iron a day.  What is your story?

It is a very strange condition. I had never heard of it either. Until my hair dresser noticed a spot on the back nape of my head. Then the thinning started. Did you have a biopsy done? Did you get my friend request? I did not receive yours.
