hi, i have the same problem! i am 13 and have had alopecia for 9 months now. i also have a bald spot on the top of my head and on the left side of my head :) i want to shave it and start fresh, but at the moment, i do actually have the same amount of hair as i have baldness. lol :P i think that if you are happy wearing wigs then there is no need to shave it all off, but if you want to be able to be free and not worry about things like "does my wig look bad?" or "does my wig look visibly like a wig" and all that, then you should! its your decision and you shouldn't have to worry about what other people are going to say. although one thing to consider, if you are going to shave your head, is this...you hyave to be able to grasp teh fact that all the long hair you did have is gone. but it is nothing to worry about. just consider it before you make any rash decisions. also, do you have a dermatologist? cuz if you do, then ask him for advice, also you can ask hairdressers, councellors, friends, even ask a teacher if you want proper helpful advice!
i found that my dermatologist is very helpful.

Dani :)
PS: good luck on whatever you decide :)
Hi Aimee, I have had my bald spots for about 2 months, and was diagnosed one week ago by my dermatologist. I am hoping that if I handle this well, that (esp.) my mom and kids will cope well with it too. I hope so.
For me it was easier to shave then to try and hide my spots. I've been shaving for the last 6 months. I use a Headblade. At first did the normal razor and didn't work for me and someone on AW told me about Headblade. I got one and never looked back. I also use the great products and i'm happy with it. But there is something you need to keep in mind. I still have "healthy" hair so when i shave you can see the dark areas on my head. But it doesn't bother me i prefer the clean look. I found because i shave it is very in powering for me, i took the power of losing my hair (i felt i lost it when my hair started to fall out" I took the power back.
Michelle, Just a thought I have had..but I have wondered if Nair would alleviate those dark spots? ..or maybe that would burn an already sensitive scalp..IDK. I'm not at that point yet, but I keep thinking of so many diffent things like this.
Diana, PLEASE don't do the Nair thing. It burns like nothing i felt before and my head ended up looking like a hug zit.
I found myself pulling my hair back the other day, trying to see what I would look like without my hair. Wonder what scars I have that I don't know about...if my head is lumpy under there..and you are right, you shouldn't have to make this decision. Maybe someday they will know more about this, the causes, and people wont have to make decisions like this. I sure hope so.
I have lost my hair since I was 12. I am now 22. I know that once I shaved my head about 6 months ago, I asked myself "Why didn't I do this sooner?" I found it easier to cope when I was bald rather than pulling out clumps of hair and noticing new bald spots everyday. It saved me a lot of heartache and depression. It might do the same for you.
Hm, growing up with alopecia, I think the aspect of losing one's hair is how will others view you being the biggest concern. Hair is just hair though, and people will see the kind of person you are with or without it. Either way, know that you got support here.
I don't have to look at pics (even though I can't :P) to say that ultimately it's you who has to decide what you do, no matter what the advice leans towards.
Good going no matter what!
If you already have big, obvious spots, why NOT just shave your head? Folks are gonna see it either way. =P
