Hi there, ive had alopecia for close to 2 yrs. Spots forming and closing up but the cycle not stopping. Doc has advised that cortisone injections will be a great method to fight this vicious cycle and provided me with positive feedback with regards patients who have been treated preciously.

I would really appreciate any advice.

Unfortunately, they didn't help me. When I was first diagnosed, this was one of the first methods of treatment and I was actually injected by 2 different doctors, but the results were the same. I hope you have better success!

My situation with the shots has been similar - I've had alopecia areata for over a year now, and have been getting the shots for just as long. My cycle with AA hasn't stopped, and I still have pretty serious hair loss, but the shots have helped fill in a bunch of my patches. Some patches, especially my huge ones, have no really filled in, but my doctor believes that the shots are working, since a lot of my other patches have growth.

All I can say is if you think it is working for a fair number of your patches, and your side effects aren't detrimental, you should keep with the shots. My doctor told me that she's had patients she's been giving shots for over 3 years, and eventually they grew most of their hair back. However, she also said sometimes the shots just don't work, so there's that.

I think the experience is different for everyone.  My son had the shots and they worked very well.  He said it was a bit painful for him.  Basically, within two weeks of the shots, his patches would be covered with stubble and then eventually fill in in the weeks after.  It seemed like the shots prevented the spots from growing.  They did not however prevent new spots from appearing.
