Hello people

I have a little predicament that I can't really figure out what to do with...

Now, my story is that about 2 and a half months ago I noticed a small bald spot in my nape...which is now a bigger bald space at the back of my neck...which looks like a big circle has been cut out from my hairline lol....and my left temple has a circle missing, also starting from the hairline, and I have one behind my ear, and one on top etc etc, all this is pretty irrelevant to my question, kind of.

Anyway, I had my hair coloured one week before I noticed the first spot, which was not there when my hair was coloured (important info? I dunno...)

Could the hair colour be a trigger for alopecia? i don't colour my hair much at all, prob about 4 times in my life...and peroxide was used as I wanted red hair...hmmm. I now have about 1.5cm roots of my normally shitty brown hair showing against this lovely, albeit faded, red....but I am far too scared to colour it again, neither red nor a closer match of my natural colour, for fear of it aggravating the alopecia...so I have to live with these roots for ages.

So, my question to you lovely people is....do I take a risk and colour my hair brown again so the roots don't show and panic myself something stupid about further hair loss, or do any of you have any tips on growing out hair colour?

Many thanks

Hi Tracy

From all I've read here and other support places around the world that should not be the case. I understand the Alopecia Areata is a auto immune condition, that does it own thing... as horrible as that information is. :(

Do you have any other allergies? As I know in my daughter's case she has many.

Hear from you soon hang in there Tracey.

honostly i think it does! the dr said it doesnt but to me i had a spot when i was 5 then never got it again till i was 21 after coloring my hair several times and highlights! after that my hair went downhill so i dont color it nomore and its looking a bit better but stress has alot to do with it to it think. juz ask your stylist for a very low developer dont use nothing to strong and dont use bleach and get it done professionally its more gentle
Thanks for your replies peeps....I think what I will do is just colour it back to as close to my original colour as I can, and leave it at that. My hair is brown so I won't need peroxide or anything...I mean if it does come out more I'd cover it the same as if I had to leave these roots to grow out lol! My alopecia is still active anyway, so who's to know what will happen whether I leave it or not. Rose, I don't have allergies as such, though I do have post nasal drip due to something.....don't know what though lol. Thank you again ladies....xx
Hi Tracey

Thanks for answering my question.

Take care.

Not a problem Rosy, also...I remembered after I'd pressed send lol, that I also get allergic rhinitis from about march right through til the end of the yr....but both the nasal drip and that started after the birth f my daughter....xxx and up until a few months ago i used to quite regularly come out in "viral" rashes....funny the things you forget when something else crops up eh lol xxx I think all of those three there are linked with some seasonal allergy, but I gave up going to the doctors about a yr ago because there wasnt really alot they could do apart from give me steroid nasal spray which didn't really do alot, and they never actually told me what was wrong xx
Hi Tracy,
I'm allergic to standard hair colr. I'm not sure which chemical it is but I was burned to a crisp!
I'm now using Henna for the second time. Right now in fact! You might want to try it. It's all natural and comes in many colors. I got mine on Amazon. Surya is the brand name. It's a creme so there is no mixing or anything!
Good Luck!
Jeffrey
Thanks Jeffrey, I think that would be a brilliant idea....I will look into it. xx
I cut my brown patchy hair to about 2mm and bleach it blonde so the spots aren't as noticeable. The spots haven't gotten worse, so I really don't think coloring matters.
Brilliant Tamara, thanks for your input....xxx I need to sort my roots out soon lol
If hair colouring caused alopecia, how would you explain why children (who never colour their hair) get it?
I think it's just coincidental.
I don't think it caused it...I just wondered if colouring it again would make it worse....but I am going to colour it back to my natural colour soon I think....well thats if I don't end up cutting it all short before I get the chance....seeing as two patches of broken hairs near my crown are becoming more visible....I am not walking around like a monk....and I can't just change my parting as I have spots either side of my head too lol...darn it!xx
I know they say it doesn't, but I wonder, too.
I was using a hair color that was causing a lot of damage, so I switched to an ammonia free type. I still suspect it may be related. This doesn't mean it would cause it for everyone, but some body chemistries may react to it while others wouldn't.
I may try the henna someone mentioned in the comments.
My spot is right at the crown, nickel size, very shiny and hard to disguise:(
I do sometimes cover it with brown eyeliner pencil which makes it much less noticeable.
