I like many others have alopecia areata. And it seems like I'm heading to the more severe case to Alopecia Universalis AU in short amount of time. I noticed here that most people on this site have AU. When I researched the disease it says 2 to 5 percent of people with AA usually progress to AU. In your opinion, do all or most people progress from AA to AU or maybe people who haven't progressed have not joined this site?

Well that happened in my case, I had AA for like two months, then it quickly turned into AU.

Thanks for your reply. Yes it happens fast how old were you?

I'm 16 now, and it happened with 14

I'm doubtful that most people here have AU. I have AA, but it did progress into what seemed like a gray area between AA and AU since I lost almost all the hair on my head and most of my leg and arm hair. All of it grew back somewhat (as I hold my arm up to the light to verify that there are indeed little hairs there).

It seemed to me most people have severe alopecia, and so I am generalizing that maybe all AA proceed to severe cases? That is my question

Well I had AA from age 10 and I could hide it until I was 39 , now at 42 almost AU , scalp and body hair gone and eyebrows at 30% remaining , never thought it would get this bad but expecting eyelashes will be the last to go. Well xeljanz here we come !!!

I thought most people have patchy hair loss. It seems to me most people progress to AU... Are you on xeljanz now?

No I'm not on it yet but will be starting it in the new year. My hair was very thick in the early years ie for the 1st 20-25 years of AA but then the patches remained but my hair thinned also which was game over in regards to hiding the patches, it's true though that a lot of people stay AA and do not progress to AU, do stay positive as there's a lot of things happening in regards to treatment these days , low dose il-2 looks promising and there's jak inhibitors which I'm going to guiny pig myself the 1st quarter of 2017.
All the best to you! Please do keep us updated..i hope it works out
Thank you for your response and thank you for encouraging me to stay positive.

I had diffused thinning until all the hair fell out on my head.. I went AT within 6 months. My hair on my  head all grew back. Fast forward 1 year exactly and I went AU within a month. I've been taking xeljanz for 1.5 years and have body hair, 70% head hair but no eye brows and only bottom lashes.

The hair on the top of my head is shedding like crazy right now.. this is such an unpredictable condition.

Thank you for sharing you experience. But you also confirm to me that most people progress to more severe cases.
