Hi there,

I tend to read online a lot. I belong to a lot of hair loss and wig forums.

I have even recently started participating in them :)

The information I've gained has been so amazing, and invaluable. I myself researched for over 6 months before biting the bullet, and purchasing my first hair piece. I ended up choosing a human hair topper, and I'm so so happy with my choice.

I myself don't have alopecia. I have hair loss from taking birth control, that never ended up getting better. Total loss thus far is about 60%. And it's still coming out. I have found some great information and experiences in this section of alopeciaworld.

I guess all I want to add is this thought: if you are finding yourself scared or on the fence about purchasing helper hair, I urge you to try. Don't be scared :)

I don't believe it's admitting defeat if you purchase a wig. And if wigs themselves are so alien to you, then just keep reading online through all the myriad of stories by women in your exact position who purchased hair.

You are soooooo not alone, and in some pretty great company. You'll also see how amazing and inconspicuous wigs and toppers can be.

It shocked the heck out of me when I saw others photos, and how seamless it could all be. And I became so relieved that no matter what, there would be options out there if my hair loss grew worse. Which it inevitably did.

I see myself in the mirror now with my topper, and I really feel gorgeous. Before, I was struggling for what seemed hours in front of the mirror, adding millions of products, hairspray and Toppik just to leave the house. And I still didn't feel confident.

Now I clip my topper in after I get dressed, and in 5 seconds, my hair is beautiful and good to go. Such relief. And it saves me a lot of time too, obviously.

Take good care of yourself, and don't be scared. You didn't choose hair loss. You don't have to pay some penance for a situation that you had no control over :)

It's not a cure, but for many of you out there, it could be enough to let you carry on and enjoy life.

This is just my personal experience. Please know that I'm not trying to belittle your pain or difficulties dealing with this. I still struggle seeing my hair coming out. But I have a good life, and luckily an amazingly supportive boyfriend, and I just didn't want to be a victim to it. Helper hair really did do just that - helped me :)

I hope if you're on the fence, and you want to try it, that you will. Just do lots of research, and you'll be okay.

Aimee, I keep hearing the same thing.  Why do you have to keep getting the eyebrows tattooed ?  I mean, tattoos are supposed to be permanent.  They are not?  Or is it a different kind of ink/process that necessitates the issue of doing them all the time?  Does that get expensive also?  During the year, do they fade?

Hi Sally,

My two favorite websites have been Wigsupport.com and The Women's Hair Loss Project (join the network, it's very active).

I will eventually post a picture.. I have to take a good one of my hair close up. You can Google hair toppers to see the options out there. Pretty amazing, some of them. Mine is virgin hair from Asia.
Cost was just under $2000.00.
Hi everyone :)

In regards to the eyelashes... We'll, mine have always been sparse, but I do have some, just very thin. I actually apply a set of false lashes daily. And nope, doesn't bother me a bit. They are cheap, natural looking and have mastered the glue :)

Eyebrows I just use eyebrow powder and pencil, but I do have eyebrows. If I didn't, I would definitely tattoo, as I've seen great work on some girlfriends...

Wearing a wig or helper hair is a personal choice. I admire both wearers and non-wearers alike.

Just wanted to write the original post for the lurkers out there who might be like I how was... Afraid of making the decision to purchase something. I found a great lady who has a home business in just this. She is also a very talented hairdresser, so that was great. She did the cut-in after the hair arrived.

I'm giving everyone a virtual hug right now. I'm in a pretty good place these days, mentally, emotionally.
I have now added two photos of my topper. You can view them in my profile. Cheers!

hi Lemming,

Your pictures look great.  You definitely give me courage. I would like a topper or something for my forehead and temple area.  I have FFA and the hair loss is around my face. My natural hair is about half inch spiral curls and I have not seen any toppers as curly as my hair. I do not want to blow dry my hair straight since I may lose more in the process. My forehead is so big now that I need to cover it. I went to several wig shops in the mall here in Canada (you know the ones in the mall) and the people are not helpful.  One lady told me to shave my head and buy a wig and another one did not even look up as she told my " we do not sell curly bangs".

Jen

Hi Jen,

Do you by any chance live in BC? That's where I live. There's quite a few options around my area, so I'm lucky. But I wouldn't hesitate to order online. Some good online retailers have a no questions asked return policy.

Curly hair is more difficult for sure, but no impossible. It's much easier finding a curly wig though, than a topper. I've seen a great one online recently.

Hi Lemming,

I live in Toronto.  My natural hair is thick and  very curly. I have lost about one to one and a half  inches all around the face and some in the nape of the neck. I have been pulling my hair forward but I have noticed my forehead is quite large in photos taken on the weekend. So I have decided that I need bangs or a topper or something.  If you see anything please send me a link.

I will send a friend request.

Thanks

Jen

Hey Jen,

Have you tried Toppik yet? I swore by it for many months, it was a life saver. I still use it occasionally...

It is not on the top of the scalp.  It is on the forehead, along the temples and around the ears. Would Toppik work on my forehead?

It won't create a new hairline, but it's surprising what Toppik can do...  It matters more in the application.  When I want to get very close to my hairline, I have to be quite precise in my application (not too heavy-handed with the fibers), and I will put my other hand on my forehead so that the fibers don't travel.

Also, if your loss is affecting your hairline, you would probably do better with a wig than a topper.  A wig (especially a lace front) will create that nice hairline that you are probably looking for.

Lace front probably wouldn't work so well for me, as I have a decent hairline...my loss is really more crown area, and general all-over...

The lace front is probably the best but I hate to cut off all my hair  at this point to accommodate a wig.  If I could find a lace front hairpiece that I could attach to my old hairline and would clip onto the crown then that may be  a solution.  I am so confused.

You don't have to cut any of your hair!!!
I've seen many ladies keep their long hair under their wigs. You can find a ton of videos on YouTube of ladies reviewing wigs, and they usually just put their hair in a low ponytail and tuck it under the wig.
Some have clips and/or combs, but I saw something online called a Wigrip, which is supposed to be amazing for women who don't like clips. It's just a headband made of special material that grips the wig and keeps it secure on your head. Go YouTube this!
