From bald to hair?
Has anyone who has gone totally bald eventually grown some or all of their hair back? My almost 5-year old daughter has been losing hair slowly for the past year and recently is left with about 10% of her hair. What is left is lifeless and falling out quickly. I know AA is different for everyone and totally unpredictable, but in trying to frame some ideas about the future, I am curious if any children who fully lost their hair eventually grew it back. At the same time I am trying my hardest to not worry about the future , but find and appreciate the beauty of today-of which my daughter with alopecia is a significant part!

sorry tanya this is totally random but do you have a boyfriend? i was just wondering cos you said it was never that bad for you so im just guessing that guys treat you the same.

I started losing my hair as a tot and lost it all by the age of 13. The only time I'd ever seen regrowth was during pregnancy but the hair fell out again after my babies were born. For the last three years my hair has been doing something, I'd like to say it's growing back but I still have spots and still don't have to shave my legs. Alopecia is very unpredictable. Your daughter may grow her hair back next month, in 3 years or perhaps not for 30 years. Arm her with the ability to accept herself as she is, no matter what. Hide your own worries at all costs, she'll pick up on them and the last thing you want is a self-conscious child - it's hard enough being a normal kid let alone a balding one! Find the positive aspects about alopecia that you can brag to your friends about that will make them jealous if you're finding that you're becoming a target for comments. Hairless people can't get lice, can't get bubblegum stuck in their hair, and you can have much more fun with a smooth shiny head than you'll ever have making braids and ponytails! Keep your chin up.

My son went AU in about a month's time when he was 14. He was completely hairless for almost a year and now has some significant hair growth. His eyebrows and eyelashes are coming back pretty good. He has regained at least 70% of his body hair. His head hair is still real splotchy, but it's definitely getting thicker. We're hopeful it will all come back (at least in time for his senior year of high school), but time will tell.

My 13 year old daughter has lost all of her hair twice. The only time it came back was when a dr. put her on oral steroids for 6 weeks. It came back in a different color and curly instead of straight. She still has bald spots but they can be covered. Only problem is she gained 25 pounds and still has been unable to get it off. Don't think I would do it again. Hope this helps.
