So, we re about to get Klara, 8 years old, her first wig. We told her when it all started that she could get a wig if she wanted, but that we thought she didn’t need one. But it s her ride, and no matter what we think, we ll do what she feels confortable with. A few weeks back she expressed a wish to at least have a look at the store. And last week we went there and she got to try some wigs on. And after that she wants one..so we re getting one!!!

We ve been to a first consultation, and I am sorry to say that I was disappointed with they had for children. The cheapest ones were some standard synthetic wigs for adults that they could take in a little bit (neadle and thread?), but would never fit as well as others. Then there were natural hair-wigs for children, something called a “Sabina”. That s what we ended up choosing. Perhaps this is what you call a lace-wig at AlopeciaWorld, but Im not sure. There is a piece of thin thin lace in the front that is suppost to be cut of anyway. Ah, maybe I take a pic later and show your.
The only alternative as I saw it was a “Vital”- wig, a synthetic wig but with fibers copying a natural hair and with the “hat” custom-made for the buyer. But the Vital was way too expensive for us, at least for a first wig.

We haven’t even seen the exact wig yet, because they didn’t have the blond one at the shop right there and then. And I am so nervous!! Klara tried a dark one on, And I could see that it will be way to thick for her and it has to be cut and thinned out a lot. What if that cut doesn’t turn out well??! Am I making a mistake choosing a natural-hair wig for a child, since they need more care? What if the woman at the wig-shop cuts her hair in a bad way? Can any hairdresser cut a wig?

What are your experiences with wigs for children? What kind of wigs have you chosen?

And then the price.. If you want to buy on the internet, I guess you could save some, how do you pick the right size, and who cuts it for you?

i got my first wig from a foundation called wigs for kids (http://www.wigsforkids.org/) they are great in terms of fitting and they sell tape that you can use so that it feels secure... the wig they donate to you can run for about 2500-3000 dollars at regular price (that's how good the quality is) but of course they donate the wigs to young children to help them cope with things such as alopecia and cancer.. i loved my wigs for kids wigs and they replace them every 2/3 yrs until you're 18 (i believe, i've had about 3 or 4 before i moved on to regular wig stores)

you can also try locks of love (http://www.locksoflove.org/) i've heard a lot of great things about this company even though i never had a wig from there...

i suggest you call them up and tell them your daughters story and some type of financial situation to see if they can give you one... i know that wigs for kids has salons around that cut their wigs when you go in for a consultation (that's what i had done)

and not any hair dresser can cut a wig and especially not a childs wig... you can not cut a wig like regular hair, there is a different technique to it... i have a hair stylist in my area who specializes in cutting wigs so she cuts mine and she has told me that you can't cut wigs the same and especially not for children because they have smaller faces so it has to fit their face... i think you should look up some salons in your area that cut wigs...

i hope everything works out for you and your daughter... i know when i was searching for my first wig about 6 yrs ago, my mom and i did TONS of research before doing anything because we were so worried about messing it up. good luck and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have :)

I just bought my granddaughter's first wig. She is 8 too. It is synthetic and made for an adult so it isnt real secure. It looked great in the salon, but I am hoping to get her a better one, made specially for her soon. Good luck.

Hi Annie. My name is Mary. I have a 10 year old daughter who has alopecia universalis. We bought her quite a few wigs from the hair store and the looked pretty cute. But most wigs are designrd for adults so it was kind of hard finding one that didn't make her look to old. So we applied for a prosthetic hair piece from locks of love. This organization gave her a beautiful hairpiece that she is able to style her self and the hair dresser can also style it. Through locks of love she was able to pick the length and color of the hairpiece she wanted. She doesn't worry about it coming off when she plays her sports because it has a vacuum suction fit and can only be taken off by the person wearing it. My daughter loves it and it looks so natural on her. We were able to get it for free and I was really thankful that they made a difference in my daughter's life. She feels more secure with it. Good luck in finding the perfect fitting wig for your daughter. Any questions just ask. It's good to have someone to talk to when they know exactly what you are going through. Have a blessed day, Mary
I AM A MOTHER OF A THIRTEEN YR. OLD DAUGHTER WHOM HAS HAD ALOPECIA SINCE SHE WAS 2 YRS. OLD, SHE HAS RECENTLY LOST ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF HER HAIR WHILE WE WERE WORKING W/ LOCKS OF LOVE TO SEE IF WE WOULD BE ACCEPTED FOR A FREE PROSTHETIC VACUUM SEAL HAIR PIECE. THANK HEAVENS WE WERE ACCEPTED AND THEY SENT HER A SYNTHETIC WIG TO WEAR IN THE MEAN TIME BECAUSE IT IS A LITTLE BIT LENGTHY BUT YOU SHOULD REALLY CHECK THIS ORGANIZATION OUT THEY ARE WONDERFRUL AND THEY CAN SHOWER,SWIM, EVERYTHING THAT YOU AND i CAN DO WITH OUR HAIR AND THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN TAKE IT OFF BY BREAKING THE SEAL. YOU CAN PULL ON IT AND IT WILL NOT FALL OFF SO IT WOULD REALLY BE SOMETHING FOR YOU TO LOOK INTO. THERE IS AN APPLICATION PROCESS TO GO THROUGH BUT THEIR WEBSITE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS THEY ARE VERY,VERY HELPFUL TO TALK TO.
