Today,I was just diagnosised with hypothyroidism. I wonder when I'm leveled out will my hair regrow. My bald spot were growing in prior to being diagnosised. The medication synthroid can cause hair lost for the first few months. I've been not been feeling well, since last year. It's a blessing to be able to know I will feel better sooner or later. Any body have any stories or information to share?

The doctors actually think I have Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease). A lot of women on both sides of my family have it, and sadly it is hereditary. I just got my blood work done yesterday. Ive lost a lot of hair, and I ended up shaving it all off, and then it started growing, and then fell out again. I asked the doctor if my hairloss could be caused by it, because someone told me only hypothyroidism causes hairloss, but he said that isnt true, especially if I have Graves Disease. My aunt was hypo for a while and her hair thinned out a lot. But after being on the medication for a while, and having part of her thyroid removed, it started to finally grow back in when the medication was leveling out her thyroid. I hope all works out for you, i know this is a bumpy ride! I have more auto-immune diseases than I wish to count!!
Hey Tamara.
Thanks for the information, I have this feeling that my hair is going to be okay. It started to regrow prior to any medication. Auto-immune diseases sucks! It's good you took the blood test, because hair or not hair, you need to get treated if you have Hyperthyroidism. Anything that have to do with the thyroid affect the hair. Keep me posted. Thanks again Tamara. I'm voting for good health, but I'll take my hair back, Thank you. lol
You are welcome. Since mine is thought to be hyperthyroidism, I have more energy than I know what to do with. I have lost 27lbs in less than 2 months which I am NOT complaining about, but I also have had a broken foot since January so its not like I'm working out or anything. Plus I cannot stop shaking and I have horrible body tremors all day long, along with dizzy spells and the WORST tension headaches, that I wouldn't even wish on a person I don't like, lol. I was actually happy when it said hairloss was a symptom of thyroid disease... in the back of my mind I am *praying* that is why I am losing my hair and that they can treat it and I can have my hair back! 4 women in my family, on both sides have hyperthyroidism that turned into graves disease and its heriditary, so I just hit the jackpot, lol.
The doctor started me on 50mcg. I been sick for a while, but the numbers was not showing, just the five nodules since last yr. Last year the doctor said it was small, so leave it alone. I'm due for another sonogram. I am feeling so bad,so thank you so much Squonk for telling me about the new lease on life! Cause I'm busted right now. Taking care of daily household chores is a big deal. How long did it take you to level out? My doctor said I will feel better within 30-60 days. Eyelashes regrowth? That's good. How long have you been on the medication? What was the time frame from medication to eyelashes?
How long have you been on meds? My hair started falling
Out nov 2009, the same time I started feeling really sick.
It's growing in now, so I'll just have to see.
glad your feeling better, I'm excited about feeling normal again.I'm also excited about having a better chance for hair growth.thank you.
When I went to my familiy doctor the first time I noticed a bald patch she immediately had my thyroid tested, when that came back Ok she then referred me to a dermatoligist, and then the fun began....
This was not my first blood work for thyroid, it was neg.before.if you start not feeling well, you should retest.
Thanks Angie, I just assumed that the one test ruled it out, I never thought of asking to be retested.
most times the doc will only check your TSH and if that is in range they let it be. however that doesn't tell you if you have Hashimoto Disease which attcks the thyroid you need to have them check for antibodies I don't know the names of the antibodies off the top of my head but can get them for you. your tsh can be within guidelines and you will still have the symptoms like hypothyroidism....
ps i am not a doc just what has happened to me ...
@Jessica. Yes Jessica what you describe was me for over a year. TSH in range, but having many symptoms of hypothyroidism. I have an appointment for my endocrinologist, this week. My Gynecologist took test for TSH it was 4.920. He said I did not need to go to the endocrinologist, but I made the appointment anyway, after all thyroids is not is specialty. I am taking the medication synthroid, but am concern about getting my T3 and T$ checked. I'm hoping both doctors are on the same sheet of music. Sometime endocrinologist will not put a person on medication. I'm feeling so bad, that I really want to be on medication. Keep your fingers cross for me. :-)
