Hi, I am new here and please forgive me if I post this in a wrong forum.
To give you a glimpse of my background, I am 18 but the onset of androgenetic alopecia started when I was 15/16. Around that time, I developed irom deficiency which must have triggered this form of alopecia.
I went to a dermatologist and as usual she blatanty said that same line: "there's nothing you can do." That has caused a series of incessant breakdowns later on.
Now I'm clinging to that iota of hope that Rogaine MIGHT work for me...but I am not 100% sure yet.
Do you know if you have heard of any success in a similiar case?
Thanks so much.
P.S. all my sisters have this problem to a far degree. None of them use Rogaine.
Sorry I fucking hate this problem; I hate seeing bald patches on my head in the mirror.

Hi,
Welcome. I have AGA. I was diagnosed around the same age as you! I used Rogaine for about 8-9 years. I was happy with the results. I have a question... You said "bald patches". Do you have more than one bald spot, or circles of hair loss? If so, it might not be AGA. For me, I have one large circle of hair loss at the top of my head. My sides and back have remained pretty much normal. My head looks like some bald men. This is typical of AGA. Did you have a biopsy completed by the doctor? I'm concerned that you might have AA, not AGA, but I could be mistaken. If you want to try Rogaine, I would suggest it. It will help to slow the progression of the AGA.
Oh, sorry. I may have misunderstood. Rogaine may have grew some new hair for me. I stopped using it, and now I shave my head. It won't always grow new hair. However, it will help your hair loss from increasing. It should slow down the progression. Without using it, the amount of hair loss will increase over time. You can help to maintain the hair that you have now with Rogaine. I used the Walgreen's or Walmart brand a lot of the time, because it was cheaper. If you start using it, don't stop until you are sure you want to stop because it isn't something that you can stop & start when you feel like it. Once you stop, the amount of hair loss will increase. I hope that helps!
Just came back from the dermatologist for another issue. She recommended rogaine to give it a try. I came home to research the side effects. I see too many side effects like irregular heart beat, blood pressure issues. I can't take that route. Also, you have to KEEP using it, or any gain you might experience will be lost. That is a lot of money, and using it twice a day, every day. For the rest of your days if you want to maintain. Too much hassel, money, side effect risk. She finally said I had AA. And Ophiasis. Could do biopsy and testing, but why? Just to really give it a name? Nothing is going to GROW back my hair the way it was.
Just an opinion, not a doctor, but my feeling is that doctors are throwing "diagnosis's" out there to placate women and your hair loss may or may not be what they are telling you. Having a long history of Lupus diagnosis myself and many frustrating years with the medical community has taught me that diagnosis is just another word for opinion.
The general consensus now is that products like Rogaine and Propecia may help you to save what hair you have, but don't count on them growing any hair back. They must be used on a daily basis and this is somewhat challenging for many women. If you feel you can follow through with the product, you may be able to save your hair until a better solution comes out.
Even though this is a difficult life challenge for you, you can turn it into whatever you want it to be. Not having hair is difficult in our beauty obsessed society, but there are good replacement options out there is you want to use them. And if you choose not to, all the better for believing that true beauty is within.
