Just wondering...... what kind of silly, ignorant or crazy comments have people said to you, a friend or a family member about Alopecia?

Does it bother anyone else when someone comments on how much you have "changed" or how different you look?  I just cringe when I hear that....I know it's not intended to be an insult - and the reason it bothers me is absolutely my image issues...just didn't know if those phrases struck a nerve with anyone else?

I stopped counting the number of times someone said, how are you feeling? Everything ok?

Is that your hair?

Funny how wigs tend to look your hair when you wear them a while (someone says this to you before you even have a chance for a real greeting)

Where do you buy your wigs? (someone you don't know who has never talked to you before--they just started work that day? uggh!)

Other's looking at your hairline instead of looking in your eyes

My family tells me that others mean well, sometimes, you know when the person is trying to make a negative comment on the sly.

I haven't heard anything bad from the world at large, but as I head into my first summer without hair and was trying to explain to my mother how I wasn't likely to want to wear a wig or a hat inside on a hot day, her comment was, "They must make summer wigs." It was just a small piece of ignorance, but it felt like a judgement on my deciding to ever go bald or my shortcomings because I don't find wigs that comfortable.

I have to say, sometimes when I read posts like this I am just thankful that I've never heard anything negative.  I don't know if its because of who I chose to share this information with or what.  I have only told a handful of people and they have been nothing but supportive.  I haven't had anyone call me out on my wig either.  I guess I've just been one of the lucky ones.  I'm not sure what I would do if someone made a negative comment.  Punch them in the face?  Ha.

On monday I was running late for work so went into the Cafe at on the ground floor of the building where I work to buy breakfast ... It was my first time going in there with my wig (I've only had it less than a month) and the girl behind the counter started saying she liked my new style and then in front of a whole Cafe said it looks like a wig! I was mortified and wanted the ground to swallow me up. Least she complimented the colour?

When I got my wig the really kind wig lady suggested about naming my wig so decided to call mine wanda. Was talking to a work colleague the day after got my new hair and mentioned that I'd called it wanda and she went off saying shouldn't do that as it was like a guy naming his you know what. I mean who says that to someone who is just making that's transition!! Went home and cried that night! Thank goodness I have a wonderful fiance and family!
