I made the 4 hour trip yesterday for my son to see a naturopathic doctor today. I have never been to a doctor like this, but I figured it could not hurt to try all resources available. I don't know if I can say I "believe" in it yet or not. I will update everyone after we have started his recommended treatment.

Basically, he said that Casey has some "issues" with his thyroid. He said it is not a problem of his thyroid not producing correctly, it is a matter of his cells taking in everything. He said if he was given a thyroid test it would come back normal, even though there are still "issues" with it. He gave him Thytrophin PMG and a vitamin called Hair Effects (a dietary supplement to support hair health and growth. He will starting tomorrow take 2 of each in the morning and 1 of each at night.

He did explain that hair growth is a slow process so to fully fill in his bald spots could take 8-12 months. But we should start seeing some activity within a month. Like I said this is the first time I have been to a doctor like this, but what do we have to lose? We stop the steroid cream tomorrow because as you all know that is not a long term treatment. I am going to try this natural way and see what happens. I will update this post in a few weeks and let you guys know if there is any change. Hopefully, I will report back with good news! I hope everyone is doing well and thanks for taking the time to read this!

As my daughter and I both have alopecia and a thyroid disease called Hashimoto disease, I am a bit sceptical when I read about the thyroid "issue" above, don't want to put a dampner on your hope, however the thyroid is a complex thing, please throughly reasearch what they have given your son, lots of natural "vitamins" can have the wrong effect on your thyroid gland when taken incorrectly if there is an underlying problem, I would be getting his thyroid tested too, in australia it is important to get the T3, T4 and TSH all tested together.

Hi! Thanks for the reply and I understand I am pulling at straws here. I appreciate all the information you have provided and I will post updates as time goes on. Thanks so much!

That sounds exactly like what has been happening to me...Thyroid issues run in my family and yet my test ALWAYS come back "normal", it's super frustrating! However, since I have a bald circle, the doctor has confirmed that it is AA. Please let me know how the medication works for your son because perhaps I will have to look into this!

I will keep you posted Danielle. With very little other options to choose from for AA I decided to try something different with the naturopathic doctor. I will let you know if and when we start getting results. I think it is certainly something to look into. It is all natural so even if it doesn't help, it won't hurt you either. I bought the vitamins at the doctors office, but I think you can also order them online. One was $51 and the other was $13 at the doctors office so it shouldn't be much more than that. A small price to pay if it helps! I will keep in touch and good luck to you!

This is very interesting. I would love to hear how this goes. It just seems like there has to be something we can do. As a parent I so get everything you are going through. My daughter is 16 and struggling with this disease. So far we have had one spot at a time but just don't want to find another! Our GP initially tried to put us at ease saying he's seen lots of patients and most never have more than one or two spots then never again. That was almost two years ago and I think we have had 4 spots since then though the last was smaller. We've gone to two dermatologists and received the steroid creams. The hair did grow back each time but feel so helpless waiting for the next time my daughter comes down the stairs in tears saying....is this another spot. It is just heartbreaking.

I look forward to hearing the follow up of this visit, and if the two supplements that you started make a difference. I agree there is so little out there for AA, I wish there was some hope in the future for us. I have thought about a naturopath myself, and wondered if there could be something I could be doing that would help my immune system reset itself. obviously something triggers this disease to start up, it makes sense that something could turn it back off. I look at people who are very unhealthy and wonder why their hair is just fine? people smoke do drugs and abuse their bodies with alcohol but have thick hair and eyebrows, I don't get it? I sure hope you find some help for your child. sounds like your a good mom who just wants to explore all options. I like that.

I went to see a naturopath shortly after I diagnosed and had sort of a crazy experience. I was 13 then and am 18 now. My mom took me to a naturopath recommended to her by a friend and we really didn't have a good experience. Although I do have an under active thyroid, I was told that it was my liver that caused my hairloss, possibly due to my mom's metal fillings as a child. It was a really strange experience so we didn't go back to him, but eventually found a diffent naturopath who we liked better. He did some blood work with me and concluded that dietary changes would bring my hair back. We tried it for a few months but there were no results, so eventually we stopped going.

I hope your experience is more successful than mine!
