i've heard nail pitting is common with alopecia areata. my nails have seemed normal until this week, i have a couple of slight ridges on two of my fingers and a little indentation on the other. i find it strange that i'm just getting this now, five months after my aa started and now after i am experiencing regrowth.

i'm wondering how many of you experienced nail pitting and if so, when did it occur? before aa, during active aa, or afterwards? does it mean anything (all of my tests including iron have come back normal).

thanks!

I have had ridges all my life and have read it is one of the signs for alopecia. I have AA for about a year or two.

thanks, sandy. i love your responses because they are always so positive! thank you! :)
My daughter had pitted nails and I did not even realize it or that it was AA in her nails until the 3rd doctor saw her. Today, most of the pitted nails are gone. I think pitted nails vary..
Hey cong on the normal tests thats always a nice thing. About the nail pitting I have been told since I have Celiac Disease it's part of that too. Do they really know hummmmmmm?

I have the pits and ridges as well. It came after I was diagnosed with Alopecia but I am not sure how soon after! I buff my nails down so you can't tell! It bothers me a lot when they are ridged and pitted! Lol
What is nail pitting?
I had no nail pitting that I was aware of...and I looked everyday! I did, however, notice beau's lines in my toenails that still have not completely grown back out. They didn't show up until after i had regrowth. I'm guessing it's because the rate of nail growth is so much slower than hair.
haha, so i guess i don't really have pitting either but something more similar to what you are describing with the beau lines. they are on my fingernails, and didn't appear until after regrowth either.
I have deep ridges in my nails, I can't remember them being any different, and I've had Alopecia for just over 10 years now :)
