Last night a woman informed me that
I needed "nerve pills" to prevent my hair from falling out!
I asked her if she really meant what she said. She was
adamant that I ask my family physician or gynecologist
to fill out a script..I asked her what kind of drug she was
talking about {as I was curious to see where this "advice"
was coming from}. I blurted out " Valium ?" as I didn't have an
idea what "nerve" means...."no, not that" she responded.
All in all I was offended that someone had to tell me what
they think I need for my happy head...I didn't take this event
as a sign of caring.
Has this kind of thing happened to you before?

Hey Lois!
I hope you're having a happy National Bald Out weekend. My friend who is a balding emergency room doctor advised me to take an anti anxiety med also. I asked him why, didn't I seem well adjusted? He said I did, but that my body is reacting to a stressor. When I pushed him further he then lectured me about African Americans having a stigma problem about psych meds. He said in his experience "we" are the only cultural group that has a problem being offered meds for mental illness. Well you know that triggered a spirited debate between us. In the end I told him that I'm not going to take his recommendation. The woman who tried to advise you was a stranger. That makes it unsolicited and yes rude. My friend was trying to be helpful to a woman he knows who was losing her beautiful hair.

Take care,
Galena
There's an epidemic of people all over the world who have no idea what they are talking about. Just tune it out. Like anything else ( other health issues, parenting, etc) you're going to value the information based on the source.

If your nerves are a little shattered talk to your Dr and get a pill. Thats why they make them....

Some associate alopecia with trichotillomania http://trich.org/

I think we can help inform others that there are a variety of types of alopecia.  Because they are not dealing with it, they can not understand it.

yeah happens to me all the time, when my dermo recommends it though, i go shopping for a new dermo.

people are just trying to be helpful im sure (i hope), but its highly inappropriate.
I wish my dermo would offer me a nerve pill.
How crazy, has it not been established that AA is an autoimmune disease? I can tell you that tho I do think that stress never helps anything, I have had some times in my life that were extremely stressful and I never lost one hair....I almost wish it were that easy, I would take a pill (if it were safe) in a heartbeat if it would "cure" my Alopecia. I find it almost offensive that people jump right to the conclusion that your somehow weak or unbalanced if you have AA, what about all the male pattern baldness, I guess that they understand. I have had so many of my friends or co-workers ask my if it were stress, which can be funny I've worked in a fairly stressful position in a Hospital for about 22 yrs now, but only developed AA about 7-8 yrs ago, I guess it just took me awhile. But, in all seriousness I do almost wish it were stress, or it they just really knew what caused it and could than stop it, what a blessing for us all. Keep smiling
Christine
