(Nothing but) fake lashes :)
Hi ladies. I don't normally post here on AW and am normally found on AUK (Alopecia UK) as that's where I live - UK. But I'm after input about fake lashes and I know AW has many more members so I'm likely to get considerably more feedback here. :)
Fake lashes are at the forefront of my mind as I'm losing mine for the first time (along with eyebrows, which I've just had SPMU'd on), though I've lived with AA for over 20 years. I believe I'm heading towards AU... which is something I've always expected would happen, as my alopecia has been been getting progressively worse over the years.
I thought I'd start a thread dedicated to the subject of fake lashes. A thread to combine all information, reviews, advice, know-how in one place, instead of having to trawl through all the old posts. I'm sure it will be useful to lots of other ladies too.
I have a million and one questions about lashes, but here are a few to start with:
Which brand of lashes works for you and why?
Have you found a good source for cheaper lashes?
Do you apply yours before or after the rest of your makeup?
Do you prefer invisiband lashes, or regular?
How the heck do you use those plastic eyelash clamp/applicator things that look like giant tweezers? (I tried yesterday and spent so long trying to get the fake lashes to fit the curved shape of the applicator that I eventually gave up!)
Do you re-use your lashes? If so, how do you clean them? (I found it hard removing the glue residue.) And how long do you expect one set of lashes to last?
Do you prefer brown lashes or black? And do you apply mascara over the top or not?
I'm a complete novice when it comes to lashes but have already gleaned numerous tips from the internet.

I just found this site, it has alot of good info, I have AU and no eyebrows/lashes also. I have never had any good experience using lashes guess I don't have the patience, but I really want to try again. You look so bland without them. Maybe I'll try the MAC ones

Well I've been experimenting these last few days. I've tried out Ardell Invisiband lashes, which are very natural looking and not terribly noticeable. I'm waiting for some DUO glue to arrive in the mail, so have been using some other stuff this week. I've found that if I put eyeliner (Bobbi Brown gel liner) on before the lashes, the lashes stick less well and I normally have to re-stick at least one edge during the day. If I put the lashes on first, onto clean skin, they seem to hold better. The downside is that when I peel the lashes off, they leave a tell-tale white line on the lid... but then, why would I take the lashes off before bedtime?
Yesterday I received some mail order lashes from elflipsface.co.uk and have worn those today. So cheap compared to standard shop price for lashes (£1.60 a pair vs £5.00), but the quality is yet to be tested. They seem OK today, but we'll see how well they clean up and how many times I can reuse them. They do feel a little heavier on my eyelids and I wonder how well they'll stand up when the rest of my bio lashes have gone.
Elf also do some eyeliners which look identical to Bobbi Brown gel liners (same shape pot and everything) for a fraction of the price. Not as great a choice of colours. I bought a couple and will test out how long-wearing they are.

You can still get brown Ardell lashes through internet vendors such as Ballbeauty-I'm not sure how that comes out when you add UK duty-but they aren't very expensive if you buy in large quantities.
If you use a good glue like DUO, and longish fingernails, you can peel each days glue off before bed-the glue should come off mostly in one strip and should all come off. If you do this you should be able to use the same eyelashes for 3 or 4 weeks, unless you cry or get teary eyes from windy days.(or take an impromptu afternoon nap in them)
I don't use the gel liner much because it does seem to make it more difficut for the strip to stick, even though gel is a great look. I try to put the first thin line of eyeliner down, in a crayon, then add the lashes, then continue to add more layers of eyeliner when sure that the glue is holding.
Always trim a bit off one of the ends-most eyelids don't need the full length of the strip.
Bending the strip into a curve each day helps them fit to your eyelid
Other things that help me-I carry extra glue and a small high power mirror in my purse (a smaller version of the one I use at home)-there are going to be times when you "feel" that a corner has sprung loose and you will need to nip into a private space for repair work. I also keep an old pencil with smudging tip for those times to apply the glue-or a wooden toothpick- usually I am trying to add glue to only a small part of the strip so need to be very very precise and the toothpick works well for that.

I use tweezers to put them on.
I clean them with adhesive removal cleaning fluid called Afta (you can get it at variety stores). Just take the cap from a vitamin bottle and put your lashes in it, then pour the cleaning fluid on top. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Take the lashes out and put them on a washcloth that you don't mind staining and brush out the softened glue with an eyebrow brush.
I like black lashes, even though I'm a blonde.
I buy cheap lashes from Ardell in the variety store and trim them. #110 is nice.

I bought a couple pairs of top and bottom when I started losing my lashes. I have not gotten them on where they looked natural enough to want to wear. I bought a cheap pair with the large applicator, but it doesn't seem to help me put them on...Not sure if I'll try again soon. I just put on dark eye liner. My doc didn't even believe me that I was missing my eyelashes, and got VERY close to see that I did not have any eyelashes! I'm hoping that others don't notice...Good luck. I bought mine from headcovers.com...(I've also gotten a lot of hats from them, they're great!)

Morning Jaye - I'm in Golden Colorado USA and when I read your email question - I had to reply. I have done a few things since losing my eyelashes and eyebrows. Number one - I had a professional tattoo on eyebrows and eyeliner for me. Number two - I watched a few fake eyelash HOW TO videos on UTUBE. Cheryn International is a wonderful website - she has a great video on putting them on. Second - I went to Sephora (and MAC) and found them amazingly helpful. The girl at Sephora told me a few things that have helped me with the eyelashes. First, she said to get either Shu Umera eyelashes or MAC - they have the thicker bands so that the glue has something to adhere to. Next, she said that some folks cut them in half and apply the separately. Third - she said that the DUO glue is good - dark or the "clear" and to put it both on the skin line AND the fake lashes - let it get tacky (30-60 seconds) and then apply it using your fingers - from the out end to the inner. I, like Pat, use the end of a eyeliner pen. I also put eyeliner on after the fact or before - if I do it before - I use ELF eyeliner - it stays put and it's about $1.00.
