I have started a course of prednisone (40/30/20 and finally 10 for the last week), and have been feeling really awful. I know it's a bad drug, but my dermatologist said I should try ti given how bad my alopecia has gotten over the last few months.

If any of you have taken prednisone, what have your experiences been like? Did you see any regrowth, and did it last? How did you deal with the symptoms from the medication?

So far, as I am only on week 2 (30mg), I haven't noticed any changes on my patches, but I have noticed the metabolic changes, mental confusion, blurry vision, amongst other side effects. Given I am almost halfway done, I am going to just finish this course, but this is just really rough on my body.

started on 80mg everyday, reducing slowly during the cycle.

by week 3-4 i had about 90% regrowth and it was peaking. by about week 9 shedding occurred.. slowly until around 3 months after going back to no hair.

pros:
i didn't suffer from insomnia, ever.
my blood sugar levels were normal.
i felt really refreshed even if i got up early in the morning, all the time.
it got my hair, eyebrows etc back pretty fast and looked like nothing was wrong with a cropped haircut.

cons::
you get a fat face,
you lose muscle,
fat redistribution is horrid.
you gain fat easily and slows the metabolism to a standstill for me (i ate low cals and hit gym everyday)
i got blurry vision.
my joints were playing up.

fat, unhealthy, potentially life threatening stuff but with hair growth
vs.
hairless and fit.

i'd rather be fit with hair but what can you do ehh.. maybe in the next year or so..

Lets just say, I will never, ever, ever take that stuff again!
Yes, my hair grew back a month after being done with it - but it may not have been related.

I was an emotional mess on that stuff. I have never cried so much in my life. I also sweated like mad and had heart palpitations for 15 minutes after eating - every time.

And I agree 100% with wise1 - don't just stop it. I can't remember what happened, but I had called the derm and they told me that I should just stop cold turkey. That was worst night ever. I honestly thought I was going to die. I started taking it again the following morning because the withdrawals were so horrible.

Yeah, the side effects are definitely adding up. I have a huge bloated face, muscle weakness, insomnia, heart palpitations, and indigestion to add to the other side effects I already listed. I am currently on a 30 mg dose, and will transition to the 20mg on Wednesday, followed by the final week of 10mg starting next Wednesday.

I haven't noticed any hair changes, but gosh, I really notice everything else changing! I feel seriously strange, and it is not a pleasant feeling at all. All I can hope is that this is the price to pay for hair regrowth. Will keep everyone updated if there is any regrowth or changes in side effects.

I started with 40mg for 2 days, then 35mg the following two etc... It was only for about 3 weeks so I didn't get any serious side effects except that it's been over a month since taking my last pill and I still suffer from terrible heartburn. This was never a problem for me before. I guess my dermatologist forgot to tell me to take some lactic bacteria or something to protect my stomach... Hang in there, and never ever just stop cold turkey...

P.S. I haven't noticed any improvement yet...still shedding tons...

My orignal Derm wanted me to take prednisone and we didnt because the cons out weigh the possibility of your hair. Facial fat and body fat are so hard to get rid of and are so bad for the rest of your body. Also, many studies show that after steriods taken by mouth are stopped the hair will fall back out o unless you want to be on prednisone long term it really wont do you any good.

In retrospect, I don't think would recommend cortisone either. I only took it for a couple of weeks which wasn't long enough to notice any facial or other changes. The heartburn I got afterwards stopped eventually but I still haven't noticed any improvement as far as my shedding is concerned. Am trying other methods now...(dietary changes etc.)
