What a crazy week! My hair started to slow down from all the "shedding" then last week really picked up and now I think I need a wig! I've been suffering from diffuse loss of hair all over my head since Nov, 2012. My derm. told me it is all growing back really well, but I am still losing it faster than it can grow! My scalp is showing through so much now, and hair is falling out all the time. My sister and I are going to go shopping for wigs this week, and I want one that won't be too uncomfortable and one that will look as natural as possible. Any suggestions on what to buy? Anyone have good/bad experiences with certain things? Thank for any suggestions. PS my mother-in-law is buying it for me! What an awesome lady! :)

Just don't make a hasty decision on what to buy. Take your time, look, try on, go take a walk outdoors wearing the wig if you can, and take a mirror. Don't rely on what the people in the shop tell you. For the most part, they are in business to make $$$ and sell wigs. Once you walk out the door, it is yours. Most of us here have made countless mistakes in wig buying. It is just what happens. If you can try on, decide on one or even two, and go home to think about it before buying, it might be worth the 2nd trip. Time to sleep on your decision. Remember long hair wigs will tangle and frizz in the back on your neck. Especially in warmer weather. They will not last as long as a shorter style.

Hello KTeacher

I'm sure this is all feeling pretty overwhelming for you at the moment. As Lexi has said take your time and think through what you need from a wig.

Make a list of your wants and needs. I did this when I was looking for a wig for my daughter and I was lucky enough to find a very reputable company and caring people that nurtured me and my daughter through the process. Before you do any shopping - take breath and write the list. My list for my daughter was to find a wig that looked absolutely realistic, was comfortable, was easy to clean and look after, was secure, could be styled as my daughter liked (ponytails etc.). My list may be different from yours but do make one then educate yourself on what is available. There is a load of information here. Read through the posts and see what you find.

Some people love processed human hair, some love synthetics, some love Freedom Vacuum wigs. Everyone has an opinion on the wig they wear (and they would normally love it otherwise they wouldn't wear it).

Good luck with everything.

I agree... My suggestions are the following (and this goes for anyone in any situation:
1. Do some research first
2. Decide what you want from a wig (maintenance, realism, longevity and cost)
a. If you are on a budget, cost may trump everything, but you can always find great affordable wigs. Or, you can spend a thousand dollars on one wig if that is what you can afford. It all depends.
3. Don't be discouraged if you don't find a wig you love in the first store
4. Once you figure out what you want & what you like the best, you can save money shopping online. If you don't end up loving a wig, there are ways of selling it online.
5. Have fun!! Take a camera if they will allow it, and make a day of it.
6. Also, ask the store to try on all the kinds of wigs (For example, human hair, synthetic, mono top, lace front...). It really helps to see all of your options in person.
Wigs are a lot of fun! Good luck!
I have a blog with information that might help...http://lifeasabaldgirl.wordpress.com/wigs-101-guide/

Alliegator: wow.. great job on your blog. i had not seen it before. thank you!! having worn synthetics from age three to age 30, I so understand what you are saying about ease of styling. But once I got REAL human hair.........AND learned how to style it.......... I felt almost normal. no shiny hair in photos. not perfect everyday and i love that! messy means real to me. anyway... thanks for all the effort you put into writing your blog. great job.

Awe, thank you, Rose!! I'm sure I would love real human hair if I ever tried it, but I haven't taken that plunge yet. I know what you mean, for sure. Thank you so much!

There may be other places to LOOK at people wearing wigs, but I just found this link on this site: take a look : (www.imageevolutionhair.ca) No, it's not my site. don't know any of the people. but I do wear a Freedom wig. and it is SO helpful to have photos. I personally think the ones that choose to NOt have bangs look more wiggy, but I am extremely critical. Yes, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. QUALITY. They changed my life.

Hi Kteacher! Since you live in North Carolina, I wanted to recommend Secrets of a Duchess (http://secretsofaduchess.com) to you in Asheville, NC. I have family in the Asheville area that recommended this shop to me, and it has been an answer to a HUGE prayer. If you are able to make the drive, Judi will take care of you. She sells so many different types of wigs and has a huge selection. I have been to her shop twice now, and each time I have left with purchases that I love.

You will be able to try on as many wigs as you wish at Secrets of a Duchess, which I find to be an important step in the wig search. She does sell a few human hair wigs as well. Don't hesitate to ask questions. It is very important for you to take your time and be comfortable with your selection.

I wish you well in your journey. This site will provide much insight and support.

Hi,here's a little info... I'm new to this too... I died when I had to buy a wig. =\ but I've been wearing them for over about five years or so.. On and off. I have gotten regular wigs, to front lace to full lace wigs. The synthetic hair, I have hated because they get ruined so fast. I like the lace (human hair)wigs because they are more natural to me. But the synthetic hair, gets tangled and kinky with everyday use, and if you don't get heat resisant ones they can singe when you're cooking or in front of an open oven! =X. Ive had to use a clothes steamer everyday carefully to straighten out what kinks i could. I've gotten my human hair wigs online for very affordable prices and it lasted me about a year so far. It looks the most natural when left alone, styling, and even tying up in a pony tail! (Missed those day). wig caps helped me with irritation (get plenty). Last year I accidentally bought the wrong texture so I looked like I had crazy unmanageable hair. That's my opinion and what I've experienced with wigs. There's always something new to learn. Like some one on here posted they use a got2b hair gel for wig glue. I tried it and its awesome.
