I wish I had a suggestion that would help with the heat - I know how you feel! I tried really hard to wear a variety of human hair and synthetic wigs for 9 months. The final straw for me was sitting in an unairconditioned theater during a heat wave (waiting for a musical show to start) with sweat running down my face from under the wig. I finally yanked it off and threw it on the floor, shouted an obscenity I won't repeat here, and then started to cry convulsively. I knew then that I had to try a different way.

I hope you get to some solution of comfort. Check out my photos and videos to see mine. All the best, Mary
Hi

This is what I personally understand about wigs, hats, scarfs etc. All are warmer than your growing hair or no hair. Anything you put on to cover your head is going to have the same effect.

When my daughter first lost her hair (she was 12) she use to say how cold she felt without it. Then she acclimatised to her lack of hair. She started wearing a wig at 12 she is now 20. During the interim years she has never complained about excessive heat. She wore her hairpiece to school everyday and lived life like any other teenager. Doing P/E, going to the beach, going to fun parks, roller coasters, went to balls, put her hair in fab hairdo's, everything she wanted to do with her hair was available to her wearing her hairpiece.

Even though she has never complained I do believe that everything including very good wigs are hotter than no hair. This doesn't make all wigs uncomfortable, some do have very good features and benefits and are specifically designed for those dealing with alopecia or long term extensive hairloss. They really work for people. The technology available is helpful and something you may like to look into.

My daughter often doesn't bother with her wig at home and around those she loves and feels comfortable with. She has the best of both worlds. If she chooses to go without hair she can - no probs with her at all. But she doesn't feel 100% comfortable with the attention that brings her at this time and really prefers to present herself in public with her hair - which is lovely. She has many styles and looks and educates anyone that asks about her condition. The different hairstyles does sometimes court questions :)

What I'm trying to pass on is that not all wigs are equal - some work a little better than others. Not all are exceedingly hot even though some people state the opposite - in my experience this isn't the case - some wigs work very well for people.

Investigate alternatives and see if you can find something that will work a little better for you.

Right, Rosy. That's what I very quickly realized - that ANYTHING covering my scalp was the same. What our bodies need for heat release is for air to reach the scalp. Any head covering stops air from reaching the scalp, and stops heat from escaping from the body. I finally decided that I could choose between physical discomfort from the heat, or psychological/emotional discomfort at being seen bald. I chose bald because the emotional discomfort gets much better (I really don't think about it now - this is me), but the physical problem never would. Mary
Hi

Yes, I understand what you are saying but I also understand through my experience with many dealing with alopecia that the option not to wear hair at all wouldn't suit them or their personalities. If an alternative is needed there are some good ones out there. When you have your growing biological hair it has the ability to cool you in summer and warm you in winter - that's what it is designed for. Hairloss is not only aesthetics as we all know. Many I chat with explain how cold they feel in winter without hair, while others are comfortable without hair all year round. Everybody has different needs and finding an alternative that works for the individual is what I like to do. We found an alternative that works for us and our daughter...it won't work for everyone but not to pass on my knowledge is not an alternative. So hence my post.

Mary you have found your thing and may I say you look fab as does Cheryl and the other ladies that prefer not to wear headcoverings. As you know not everyone embraces this look and when they don't good alternatives should be available for their needs.

As you have said their are choices to make around hairloss - mostly around how you want to present yourself. How you feel physically and mentally are important considerations and ones that I fully understand and do my best to encourage people with what ever choices they make.

My daughter is not uncomfortable in her wig choice. She is not hot and her head breathes and is healthy. Her wig takes on the warmth of her body and passes air, vapour through it's cap, while still giving her no fuss security and looks. It works for her just as your look works for you.

Not all choices of hairpiece have the same features and benefits is what I'm trying to pass on. Do your investigations from a individual need and often people will find an alternative that works for them.

Rosy - I didn't mean to come on too strong, or like I was being critical. As I've said before, I'm not anti-wig, and I know that going out bald is not for everyone. I support anyone who prefers to wear a wig. We all have to make this choice for ourselves, and I'm happy your daughter's choice has worked out well for her. I responded to Samantha's post because heat was the major problem for me, and as I said, I really wanted wigs to work for me. Mary
Hey there Mary

I think I'm coming across a little strong-not my intention. I didn't find you critical - I like what you say! I'm with you Mary - whatever suits the individual suits me. :)

Hugs

You should try the gripper secure!!!

Alyce
Do you wear a gripper? I'm very curious==have a vacuum, need something new, and to avoid that scene in the cinema above would love to find something cooler. Summer is too hot for me to do regular activities like volleyball, hiking, canoeing with my wig. And I'm not always confident about appearing in my other guise, the hat or scarf. Really puts a dent....
I wore my wigs this past summer to work, where there was usually air conditioning. When I get home, I usually take off the wig and either wear nothing on my head or a light cotton scarf. If I had to be out in the heat for a long time I would probably wear a hat, possibly stuffed with something to make it look fuller on top. I hope you figure out something that you feel comfortable with.
You ladies just wait until menopause: that's when the REAL fun begins, heat-wise!

Anyone have the Gripper Cool Solutions wig? I wonder if they are truly cool in summer heat. They are way tooo expensive to buy one and then be sweating bullets in the heat of Florida !!!! I would imagine a sweaty head would ruin the inside of any wig, right?
