My two and half year old keeps telling me that her hair hurts. I know that it is not uncommon for the scalp to hurt or tingle before the hair falls out. I also have heard that headaches are not uncommon as well. But other than giving her tylenol, what can I do? A cool wash cloth? Does anyone know of anything that might give her some relief?

What a beautiful little girl! I'm so sorry that the both of you are going through this.

Everyone is slightly different so hard to say what she is feeling. For me, it was a dull ache, like my hair was twisted the wrong way or had a big knot. I had a long pony tail for a long time so it almost felt like it did when the hair tie was too tight. This was more annoying than painful. Finding a distraction helped.

There are also times when the area gets very warm and sore to the touch, similar to what a sunburn would feel like but without any visible signs. A cold pack or cool towel where it hurts helps.

Both of these come and go. Neither last too long, typically less than a few hours. You might need to check with a doctor if her episodes appear to last longer, just to rule out other causes. Best of luck...hope she feels better.
When my hair was shedding I also would have a pulling sensation like when you take your hair out of a tight ponytail. My scalp is very sensitive if your daughter is wearing hats or anything else on her head it could be bothering her. Have you talked with her doctor/dermatologist, they may have some suggestions. I am sorry you guys have to go through this.

Good luck

Awwh, i have young children. I also have AU. I actually did find the cold wash cloth helpful. Sometimes an ice pack covered with a towel would help too. I wish I had a better suggestion.
I used to put a bandana in the fridge :) but awash cloth would have the same effect I would assume :)
Hi - I have found that taking an anti-inflammatory helps alot (Ibuprofrin) since the roots get inflamed below the scalp when they are being attacked. Also - fyi, when my scalp feels this way, it actually hurts to have hot water hitting it in the shower...so be mindful of this when giving her a bath.

Good luck!
Hi Stacey and Sebree
I have never had this pain but have alot of friends who do and some are helped by Benadryl. Hope you find the right thing for your precious daughter. She is adorable!
