Hi, my name is Crissy. I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with Alopecia in Oct. It is now January. I am thinking of shaving my head this Saturday. I cried about every clump of hair that fell out now I don't every time, but still I'm afraid to let go. I am also afraid to show the bald, I hide under hats and when I can force myself to wear a wig. Is it a good idea to just shave what is left on my head? I also had asked my bf to do it for me, he agreed a little to happily, but really I have been hiding under my hats he hasn't seen exactly how much more hair I lost just in the last 2 weeks. So I was wondering if it is a good idea to let him do it? I was also wondering if it would be less painful to just shave it off?

Hi Crissy!

I am so sorry you're going through this. It is such a difficult thing to figure out. I can remember just wanting someone so bad to tell me what to do, because I didn't know how to handle any of it. I have dealt with Alopecia since 2009, and I still don't know what to do! Lol. But someone once asked me, is the current hair (or lack of hair) situation keeping you from doing what you would normally do? If it is, it might be time to try something different, take some small action. In the past, and even sometimes now I wasn't doing things I normally would because of the patchiness/thinness of my hair. I have gone through three pretty bad times where clumps of hair would fall out, one time it lead to Universalis. Two of the times I did shave my head. It helped me in several ways. I was able to shower without double-checking my hands for clumps of hair. I was able to sleep without trying to lay as still as possible. It just helped me not to obsess over the hair loss, and gave me the opportunity to relax a little bit. I had my brother shave my head for me. And I'd say as long as you're comfortable with your boyfriend, meaning he can provide tons of hugs and support for you, then it could be a good experience.

Wish you all the best! :)

Ellen

Hi Chrissy,

I found shaving my hair was the best thing I could have done as the previous post said, it stops you obsessing over it. I've got a fairly good wig which I wear out all the time and no one knows its a wig. It cost me £250 so wasn't cheap but not terribly expensive either.
I find the wig fits better bald aswell.
Good luck in what you choose to do but honestly it doesn't feel like it at the time but it's the most positive thing you can do. My hair has started to grow blond fine fuzz since shaving it whether it's related I don't know. But I definately feel more relaxed and don't cry daily like I was.
Showering etc is so much quicker and easier too :)

I don't ever want to tell anybody what to do.  I can only share my experiences.  And I have to tell you that shaving my head was the most freeing, uplifting experience I had had up to that point.  I dreaded doing it so much that I was sure it would deeply effect me.  Instead I felt a weight lifted.  I hope you do what is right for you!  Good luck.

Hi Crissy-

I just wanted you to know that I'm in kind of the same place you are right now with alopecia and trying to decide if/when to shave the hair I still have.  I feel a "tug" inside me to do it, but am still holding back a bit.  It's ok to take your time deciding.  The funny thing about losing my hair is how desperate it makes me feel.  But logically I know the world won't stop turning if I shave my head or if I don't.  Our hair is just a part of us--it doesn't define us.  You are not your hair--you are you.  I wish the best for "you"!
